Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

"Nothing, nothing, NOTHING is going to live up to this much hype. Nothing. "

Yeah, I gotta agree with this. I got to see Matt's work several times, and while blue-eyed Vampire Girl is going to live in my dreams for a LONG time, those of you who haven't seen it yet are going to look at the size of this thread and say, 'what the heck was all the fuss about?'

Timing, baby. Timing.

And technical excellence, of course.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Were those contacts or digitally added in? I always wanted to see how I would look with cat eyes ever since I saw Last Action Hero back in the day...

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Matt, is that a picture of you on that page?
I'm trying to figure out if you just look pissed because the photographer made you hold that heavy ass monitor for too long. :P

Having not seen your making of video yet, I somehow figured you looked like James Van Der Beek.

Anyways, thanks for hookin us up! That vid is awesome, awesome and awesome!

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Matt, no disrespect to you, because that's an excellent piece of work. You couldn't help the proportions to which this thread got blown out of.

But I just want to scream, "that's IT??!!" It wasn't quite waiting 16 years for a new Star Wars movie and then getting Episode I, but still . . .

But I do agree -- a very bright future awaits you.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Well, after reading all this hype I FINALLY got to see the piece. Very nice indeed. Some beautiful poetic shots in there. Sophisticated work. Now where can I see that "bring me to life" video that was mentioned earlier?

One question: the aspect ratio of the QT movies seems stretched horizontally somewhat (wider than anamorphic) is that intentional? The image looks squashed a bit.

I look forward to seeing more of your work. Congrats!

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Roger, would there be a way to allow us to actually download that clip to a hard disk ?

Thanks a lot ! ;)

[quote author=Matt_McDermitt link=board=Clips;num=1078364324;start=225#234 date=03/27/04 at 00:00:08]a lot of effort went into getting the rough footage to look as close as possible to the final product. The post work DEFINATELY enhanced the entire production, no doubt - It wasn't as simple as point and shoot though. ;)

Now after 10 pages we are getting to something interesting on this topic. (No offense to Matt - truly beautiful images you have there!)

Yes, the workflow of a cinematographer is changing, and although many of us still think that a true DP is a film buff that get everything done with their cameras and lightmeters on the spot, we all know may of them wait for telecine to mess around in tape-to-tape. Many video shots get drastically changed on color correction, to the point where you cannot really tell who is the real author of the photography of the piece (the DP or the Editor/Colorist). And it will only get worse, because with digital video gaining increased resolution formats, and with the definitive replacement of film (It will happen, in 10 or 20 years, but will happen), every editor will have the ability to do whatever he wants in post. In a DV workflow thats already a reality, and it's only a matter of time until it gets standard on every piece we see. We will probably develop a technique of shooting that will take that in account (max out the information) , and have a DP that carries the concept of photography to post. Just like we have a location sound technician (that just records all he can) and a sound editor that gives the sound its juice. I don't care how Matt gets his images, or if he is supposed to be the next Alfred Hitchcock, but for the work he presented, he already is a very mature cinematographer, at least in DV.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Matt has done a good job, that's for sure. Even a remarkable job, given his young age. And the fact that he shot in Boston is definitely a plus ;). However, I'm not sure his clip deserves all that hype.

Some decisions on colorimetry I found questionable, but that's only a matter of personal aesthetics. More disturbing to me was the fact that two or three cuts appeared "unclean" ; there were, here and there, undesirable objects in the background (such as a traffic cone) ; the rack focus thing was, IMO, an interesting but overused gimmick ; there was definitely something wrong with the aspect ratio in at least one shot where people look "flattened" ; and the beat edit is significantly offbeat at least once (when the girl falls/throws herself down on the sidewalk).

For all this (constructive, I hope) criticism, I applaud the filmic look and all the potential demonstrated by Matt. I don't think you're there yet, Matt, but you're certainly on the right path, and I wish I could say the same about myself ! ;D

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

for everyone who says he hasnt "lived up to the hype"... i think most of you are/have said that having only seen Uninvited. yeah, i liked Uninvited, but i dont think it was worth this hype either.

but i think a lot of us who have praised him for his work are referring to his other pieces that were on the site. im not sure where exactly in the ridiculously long thread everyone started assuming we were only talking about the Uninvited video.

his Uninvited video was a rough edit. and like he said, most of the footage shown there was just the test footage.  when he gets his site back up, check out his clips for "BRING ME TO LIFE"... and youll see what all the hype has been about.

haha. oh man, i hope this thread never dies...  ;D

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

OMG, 9040 views and 250 replies! Jarred, i think its time to charge for some ad space on this thread alone! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

XDOGX : oh, all right. I'm looking forward to it !

Tizzy : yeah ! Let's see some advertising about that mattebox Jarred is testing in the Hardware section ! :D

Hard to say, never had bandwidth issues on any of my sites as there is a 5 Gb per day bandwidth allotment for each that we've never exceeded before.

I sent an email to our provider asking when this site will be back on-line, but as of yet I haven't gotten a reply.

I may need to have Matt scale his movie down some as it is actually quite large for internet streaming anyway without being on a dedicated box for internet video streaming.

We'll see.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

or if he's cool with it I could recompress it for the web... Maybe into different versions, etc...

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Oh you people are such teazes! This coudn't have been hyped more efficiently if you tried... Not that i'm implying that Rodger is in on it. Just an (un)fortunate bandwidth overload issue.... Is there a mastermind behind all this? Hehe
