Having trouble finding wounds that look realistic and not to over the top. Any suggestions where? Yes, I have used google a plenty. Yes, I have looked at costum shops.

The specific wound I am looking for is one someone would recieve after being battered HEAVILY.
 
What kind of wounds are you looking for? Gunshot wouinds, cuts, stabs, etc? I can probably direct you depending on what you need.
 
Mortician's wax and liquid latex, and lots of makeup, if you wanna do it right. This takes a little bit of time and skill, but it's how Hollywood does it.
 
We bought all our makeup fx from www.fxwarehouseinc.com. We used them because we're in Florida and so are they, so we get UPS ground delivered next day.

Anyway, great selection and great service. They have EVERYTHING.

We used liquid latex, 3 types of blood (dry, super thick, and runny), spirit gum, rigid collodion, and flesh-colored makeup (for blending into skin). One thing I would recommend that we forgot to get is blood-colored makeup in addition to the actual blood. It can just help for tying things in and serving as a base color. Aquacolor brand is great.

For your split skin they do sell some prosthetics (pre-made latex pieces) that you can apply with spirit gum. Any of these may be what you're looking for:

Make sure you have some makeup sponges and brushes on hand for application. You can just get those from Target or wherever.
