To calculate the area, you'd have to know the dimensions of the chip. The "1/3" doesn't mean anything specific, there is no dimension on a 1/3" sensor that measures 1/3. In general terms a 1/3" sensor is about 5.25 x 2.95 mm, so around 15mm2 per sensor, or 45mm2 for total size.but here the 3 x 1/3" ccdr sensors (aggregate area of .9" ?) clearly show who's boss in light gathering.
It's less than 1/2", in fact it's very close to 1/3". If you want to do direct comparisons, just actually do the math -- 1/3" = 1/3, or 0.3333 inches. (note, again, that it really isn't, but for purposes of comparison it'll do). 1/2.84" = 1/2.84, or 0.352". So it's a little tiny bit bigger than a 1/3" sensor. The numbers aren't exact, but the proportions should be.How do you make sense out of 1/2.84-inch ? Is that 1 sensor that is 2.84 inches or 1 sensor that is 1/2 inch and a little bit more?
