FS7: Would You Buy A Panasonic AU-EVA1?

Yesterday I shot a job on my ex1 - for various reasons including that I needed to have a light package and lens with reach.

I am still convinced that mft could deliver a wonderful cross between s35 and affordable zoom range.

I'm also convinced that canon mount makes construction of rangey zooms impossible.

So yep canon mount is a fail design wise for eng/wedding/corporate camera IMO

Aren't you really asking for the DVX200 then?

I understand your thought process, but vast majority of the Western World market disagrees. Just the way it is.
I find it a bit curious that you/Panasonic still insist on quoting the "vast majority of the Western World market" when multiple members here expressed their dissapointment and actually named it a dealbreaker, in the lack of more mounts (m4/3) specifically in my case, yet you continue to "market " the camera on the very forum where the members opinions seem irrelevant, regarding the mount on the EVA...though I'm hardly relevant to you and Panasonic, I would have simply bought this camera...just to own...instead I now default to the camera I actually want, i.e. The Varicam LT, which production will only buy if a project we're going to be pitching Netflix comes through....I suspect the numbers who don't want the EVA with an EF mount, is actually quite large, relative to how many of these pro style cameras Panasonic will actually sell...of course, the reality is, I have no access to your research, so on my part it's merely speculation...but I do see Canon owners happy about this, and the Panasonic owners not so much...and across a couple of forums I bother to check. Anyway...Pansonic is still my only choice....just not on this one!

Not in the market for the EVA, but I would wager the number of customers/potential customers that want/prefer EF over MFT is HUGE. Playing it ultra safe, I'd say 2:1, but probably 4:1 or even 10:1. I'd rather see a swappable mount system, but EF over MFT is the smart move by Panny.

There is no demand for m4/3 loads for S35 canon mount is very flexible will take all canon all Nikon, Leica r, older Zeiss with adapters etc. so it's a very pragmatic choice.

I find it curious how the idea of a m4/3 mount (Panasonic uses it) is equated with a m4/3 sensor...JVC did an M4/3 mount on a s35 sensor that can actually crop down to take s16mm lens too...so for me a pragmatic mount would have been one that could be used with Panny native glass (I own 4)... practically any legacy glass ever made...EF, Nikon, Zeiss, Lomo...it all fits with cheap adapters (I own over 30...only 4 of which are APS-C....the rest all FF....anyway...my needs are irrelevant and I'll simply buy something that suits it...for those who are not familiar with an M4/3MOUNT....it's as flexible as Sony's Emount...the sensor is something altogether different.

The most common non-cine mount is the Canon EF mount. That's the glass that most people own. ( everything I own is either m4/3 or Nikon mount, so if I buy an EVA1 I will have to start buying some EF glass )

I've always felt the M4/3 mount was appropriate for smaller sensor cameras because the lenses were lighter, but it just feels a bit small and weak if I want to use my Nikon 80-200/2.8 -- which is pretty much my go-to lens for my FS7 interviews when I want to throw the background out of focus.

And of course your Nikon lenses can all adapt to the Canon EF mount so you can still use them. (And most of your M4/3 glass won't cover the Super35 sensor area anyhow...)

Of course if I had my druthers, I'd want a nice, sturdy Sony FZ mount that can adapt to almost anything...

Ive lost the specs of the dvx200 but afaik they are thus?

No hfr
No 10bit
No log
Lens stuck on
Lens likely has a sloppy/sludgy focus ring.

gimme 10bit and removable lens - voigtlanfer for broll and interviews - and yes the camera would be interesting :)

Reading those specs the fs5+18-110 is the closest

Im so spoilt by ability to speedboost my EF or nikon F lenses. Gonna be hard giving up that ability going forward. A locking mf/t-mount would be ideal in that case. You would be able to get all your lenses adapted and with the choice of speedbooster. Maybe include the EF-mount adapter in body price if it makes market sense.

No worries
The Panasonic EVA2 with LT interchangeable lens mouting system is scheduled for launch at NAB 2018. That's only 8 months from now.
Priced at $9995

I was only suggesting it in context with you saying you used an EX-1, and asking for M43; that's pretty much what the DVX200 is, is a.modern large-sensor replacement for the EX-1 type of camera... Obviously it isn't an EVA1 or FS5 style camera, so if that's your priority then a DVX200 wouldn't work...

Sure - but I would not be spending modern money on a 420 camera.

It not new or rocket science to want a gh5 with Nd and xlr - I'd like that with a dedicated mft zoom which I think could provide reach and a certain element of the large chip look.

Yeah, the DVX200 is basically a GH4 with a fixed lens.

But what people wanted then was a DVX200 with a lens you could change!

Of course now the GH5 is out, people wouldn't want to settle for a DVX200 with interchangeable lenses, they'd want the capabilities of a GH5 instead.

Indeed, with the smaller MFT sensor you could have a crazy long zoom range with a constant F4.

Look at the Olympus 12-100mm F4 for instance, that is an awfully long zoom range in such a small lens!

But many of us pro video shooters would be find with a lens double (or even triple??) that size! Imagine how many times zoom it could, a great ENG set up with such a lens paired with the EVA1! But it can't be done while Panasonic sticks the unwieldy EF mount, instead of MFT mount.

Or make a f/2 zoom for MFT? Or maybe a f2.8 zoom with a wider range than just 12-40?
As the increased size of the lens (and increased cost) wouldn't matter terribly to many video shooters with a Panasonic EVA1, unlike MFT stills shooters who care much more about a very compact kit. (as that is a major attraction of the MFT system for stills shooters)

So yep canon mount is a fail design wise for eng/wedding/corporate camera IMO

Agreed, was disappointing they didn't make the EVA1 with a locking MFT mount instead.
A locking MFT mount could have been a "base mount" for other mounts, Panasonic could even have sold it with a EF to MFT adapter already included in the basic kit! (just like they already do with the Panasonic Varicam LT, which is solid with an EF mount, but is user swappable to PL)

Exactly!!

I hope so! (well... I hope it is sooner! And with less of a price increase! And that the interchangeable mounting system is because there is a locking MFT mount at its base)

Plus 100!!!...not likely according to Mitch but for what it's worth, took the camera off my radar.

I've often heard this mentioned across many other forums, I wonder how many many sales Panasonic is missing out on because they didn't offer the Panasonic EVA1 with a locking MFT mount.

Is extra dumb because it is not just harming EVA1 sales, but would have harmed GH5/G80/etc & lens sales as well. Because what confidence should people have to buy into the Panasonic GH/G ecosystem when not even Panasonic themselves has confidence in them going upwards! Rather they intend to leave their customers at a dead end (well, until the GH6 comes out in a couple of years time, and then there will be an upgrade path forward).

I never said you were irrelevant. Quite the contrary, why else would I be here but to interact with people such as yourself? I am not arguing or disagreeing; I'm just here to explain the Panasonic position. While many people such as yourself would use the MFT mount to use adapters for lenses that cover Super-35 and beyond. But from Panasonic's perspective, the company manufactures many MFT lenses and most if not all of them would not cover the EVA1 sensor. So this is problematic for the less technically-minded clients out there. It might not be an issue for you but it's a huge issue for a manufacturer such as Panasonic.

Please don't post things like that without putting a smiley face and letting people know that you're joking. This has no basis in reality but a casual reader might think you know something they don't.

Everyone: He doesn't and it's not.

Well, I wasn't referring to you, in terms of whether I'm relevant to Panasonic or not...and I understand what happened to VlogL when it was released and people who had no business shooting in any log profile ever, were having disastrous results with it, yet instead of blaming themselves, blamed Panasonic...so I get what you say about an M4/3 mount being mistaken for a sensor...and to be clear, I remain loyal to Panasonic...I admire both the thoughtfulness with which they developed their products, and what I see as enormous integrity, re what they give in terms of both quality, and great reliability...and truth be told....I want the Varicam LT...the EVA I could have bought out of pocket...the Varicam production will have to buy for a specific project if it gets funded...and no doubt when the EVA footage starts dribbling out, we will all start drooling over it.

Mitch
I think it is pretty patronising to use this understanding argument.

It would also seem poor strategy to not offer an "Eco system" Eva a cam - gh5 b-c cam for the wedding corporate guys who are exactly the market for sub $10k cams

I'm sure Sony sell a lot of a7 and othe emount compacts to fs7 5 owners.

Image circle is a photography 101

Canon sell efs Nikon sell dx - both lens sets can be used in error on full frame cameras

Lens Meta data can (and does) induce a crop mode in camera when a dx lens is used on a fx Nikon

Maybe educate your employers on lenses a bit - there are some good videos by Abel cine. Like "a lens is a lens is lens" :)

Etc.
