FS7: Would You Buy A Panasonic AU-EVA1?

cinema5d has updated info and specs. Correct me if I was reading wrong but there is no 10bit 422 60/50p intra and the 400mbps codec will only be available on a later update. (this is when Mitch's experience from Odyssey 7Q feature delay will come into the game.. scnr) I appreciate more and more what Sony has put into our hands already 2 yrs ago. (custom WB in CineEI would make it perfect..)

That's correct Clermond, though Panasonic's record of delivering what they promise is very good. Worth noting also, that when I picked up my FS7, 3 years ago this October, it had many missing features, bugs and curious firmware features that have been ironed-out over the years.

I was on back order for 9 months and got mine in June 2015. Can't remember what new features I had since then. NR in CineEI (which I do not use..) I picked a GH5 recently and I was surprised about image quality an colors. I leered a little to the EVA-1 since then but 4K/50p is a must. That's why the C300II wasn't a option either.

I once spent money on a promise: 7Q for the FS700. I had a monitor only for a few weeks and after Iwas shooting tons of raw for months instead of the "popular codec we can't name yet" What a pita. After ProRes finally came it took another few months for FW upgrades until it was at a level I was expecting from the beginning. I know it's Panasonic not a small company like C-D. But it's the same guy who is selling the promises. I will definitively wait.

CD & Mitch eventually came through on all their promises so I wouldn't be so harsh. You should always expect things take longer than first promised. If you want a company to bad mouth try Small HD who promised that their 702 monitor would be able to send LUT's to a secondary monitor "coming very soon" for over a year then just said they weren't doing it after all. Glad I got the Odyssey instead.

I read this also and that could be a big sticking point as the Intra codec would be essential to me and I'd be reluctant to spend that money on a promise. How hard could it be to include it now? Seems like a bad business decision.

GH5 400 Mbps recording requires V60 ( or higher speed ) SDXC memory cards which are kind of rare right now. These are the ONLY SDXC memory cards that will guarantee that every bit is written to the card at 480 Mbps or faster. These cards should be available at the same stores that sell GH5 cameras by the end of the Summer. ( i.e. mid to late September )

If Panasonic released the 400 Mbps upgrade and most people could not find V60 SDXC memory cards all h*ll would break loose. So I would not call this a bad business decision when the required memory cards are not easily available right now. Everything should change in a month or so. ( I've been holding off buying any new SDXC cards because of this )

you are right, I woun't talk about the past anymore. The lession I've learned: I only purchase anything because of existing features and functions not because of future announcements. Actually I see the FS7 making money for another year.

The missing features; soon to be released when we get around to it, reminds me of the release of the PX270. Although a 1080 cam, at the time, had features which were very attractive and still are. Except they weren't all included at the initial release and dribbled out a bit at a time. This really pissed off a lot of people (early adopters) about a cam which had and still has some great features. But it really killed the buzz surrounding the release. Seems like Panny should have learned their lesson from this. It's great they can improve the cam and offer new features with firmware, but to not deliver on the original promise of the cam is marketing folly. (Not Foley)

I wouldn't hold Mitch responsible for any of the C-D firmware delays. I'm still waiting (haha) on some promised features for my NanoFlash and Gemini -- which were both before Mitch moved from Abel to C-D. He can only relay what he's told by management and the engineers - and software/firmware development and testing at a small company like C-D can take time. Now that he's at Panny we can assume he'll be relaying what the company lets him tell us.

Actually I see the FS7 making money for another year.

Why not another decade? In stills I have a 20mp camera with nice colour and in the main that is all any client would want. I cannot even remember how old it is.

I only see the FS7 'threatened' by what? Maybe 500FPS camera - Id like that. All the new breed are only tingling on the edges of being better than an FS7, they do not appear to obsolete it. And also it makes pretty enough pictures and that will not somehow 'die'

The C200 raw is appealing but data/media costs and transfer times need to come down to make that a workaday reality.

I still use my 2008 EX1 sometimes.. actually I don't really know a better camera than that when I need a handycam format - probably there is one - but my EX1 works fine when Im playing in that park

what I am still missing at the FS7 is a nice color to burn in with custom white balance. I tried so many custom settings but nothing came close to CineEI with tweaking in post. Probably there is a solution but it's too complicated for me.

The GH5 is amazing and a S35 with that color science plus V log, 4K/50p, IS and proper AF would be a real temptation.

(My still clients won't accept 20MP files, they want to be impressed by 50MP, no matter if they really need it)

Agree.. the fs7 isnt suddenly not going to be requested in one years time.. its chicken and egg.. the fs7 has gained such a massive foothold in that market .. prod mangers etc just go with what everyone else they know asks for.. they just want the safe camera.. the same as the rest use.. these people know nothing about gear usually.. they just ask for what others are using.. and stick with it..to cover their own arse. the fs7 saved the f5.. it saved XAVC.. it must be one of the most used pro cameras in the world.. I cant think of any camera even close to it.. with the huge Sony parts/maintenance /support (ok question at times :)etc network..dont know what would knock it off its perch for a while.. everything goes FF.. ? 3D over.. 6k-8K total bollocks .. HDR..REC2020.. its all set for..its second best to just writing money

The EVA-1 might hold great colorscience... but why oh why did they that to the 60p?? I mean, soooo many internal 4:2:0s on that chart. So if you want pretty 60p or faster you'd have to spend more money to get a recorder, media, storage and so on.... That puts it above the 8K price tag.
