Would Tester 13 will work on the 7D?

So now that the GH13 is killing it and the envy of all Canon users. Can we get Tester 13 to take a crack at the 7D / 550D? The GH13 project has to be reaching an end sometime in the semi-near future, because how much more can be done? He's done it all.

I'm sure the Canon users would gladly donate and buy the end product? I know I would for an improved codec.

I'm not sure if he's just completely partial to Panasonic, but he would be helping out Canon users for sure.

I guess Barry would know since he's friends with Tester 13.

Tester 13 is a legend.

I think it really isn't so much of a matter of who works on it, I think Canon implemented much tighter security on the 7D than is on the 5D or the GH1. If you read through the few posts of Trammel on the dev site this becomes clear. I'm not holding my breath for anyone to be able to work through it.

I think petitioning Canon is our best hope.

I find this post by Trammel quite confusing.
In conversation he clearly indicated that he is able to completely decrypt and encrypt back all firmware, including checksums.
All security he is referring to is only removed autorun routines and some strange installation counter.
He do not use our way with modifying firmware image, so, it is hard to tell, really if Hudson's comments apply here.

Hey Vitaliy,

Thanks for taking the time to post on the 7d/550d page. Excuse my ignorance since I am not a coder, but basically what you're saying is that the 7D firmware and codec can be modified as is not as tightly controlled as was previously thought? With your knowledge of codecs and flavors of codecs, do you think that a tweaked flavor (ie. better) H264 or a Motion Jpg codec could be implemented on the 7D.

From my observations of your work, it seems like the answer is not to just up the bit-rate only, but tweak the existing parameters.

Also, what's is your take on the Moire problem?

Also see that your join date was April 2010. It's incredible that you've done all that you have for the GH1 in just 3 MONTHS! Stunning actually as I never realized it was such a short time period.

Hey Boulder, what is the link to Trammel's development site? I'd like to read some of his blogs. Tried to google it, but couldn't find it.

What do you want from it? What Tester 13 did for the GH1 is kind of a moot point on the 7D (codec works just fine) and since there is no mjpeg option anyway, I don't see where improvements may come. It's not like all these cameras have codecs stored in them just waiting to be turned on.

What you should ask for is a magic lantern type of patch that would give us manual audio control, zeebras, crop lines, etc.

Edit: Also, don't speak for all of us. My 7D still works just as well as the day I bought it.

Exactly!

I know many of the people over in the 7D forum have not been following the GH1 hack from the beginning so they might not be aware of the somewhat limited scope of it. It just happened to target a few key issues that were fixable...not create new things from scratch. Not to undermine the work that was done.
