World Exclusive First HVX200 Footage..PART 2

Am I the only one who is dissapointed with the footage??
I dunno maybe I was expecting too much, but I'm just really dissapointed, the footage looks okay but I was expecting better results. It looks tooo videoish, I was expecting a more pleasing filmic image. Also I was ay DV expo and the LCD on the HVX was really bad, did anyone else notice it. It looked superlow res....

Yeah the LCD is pretty crappy. But then again, we were all testing the HVX under the worst lighting conditions possible so of course its going to look bad. Actually I take my statment back, the LCD isn't crappy, its just average, don't expect to see full blown HD out of a little 3.5 inch display. I was messing around with one of the Panny rep's p2 cards and saw some of the earlier stuff he recorded outside prior to dvexpo. It looked awesome..

You really concerned me...but regarding the available footage only here, I'd say it's a question of lighting, gamma/color correction, DOF, composition, etc. You can follow here other post about the same subject.

Of course, if I'm not wrong...as well, the 1080 definition @progressive mode will be acceptable to 35mm film-out purposes...

Richard, the Barry's exterior footage is the same desert stuff that you saw yesterday?

EDIT: Richard answered me by private message. It's the same footage. Thanks rgd, nice contribution.

Kick A-- stuff!! Now get to work on the HVX user guide and DVD demo which includes camera set-ups and a full post-production workflow using the P2 cards and FCP HD!!!
I'm workin' on it! I'm thinking I'll just pull my internet connection and not plug it back in until the book's done!

What workflow describes how you got to the finished 1080 WMV-HD?? Future users want to know!!
Drag 'n' drop MXF file into DVFilm Maker, tell it to remove pulldown and convert file to 24p .MOV. Output files.

In Vegas, select the 1080 HD preset, change it to 24 and progressive; import, chop and edit clips into 30 seconds of HD goodness. Tell it to render a WMV9 file. In the presets, choose "custom" and type in 1920x1080 at square pixels, and render with "best" quality. Voila!

(well, that's basically it, but it was really slow considering that Vegas only plays back maybe 2fps, maybe 3. But rendering the WMV was very fast, maybe five or six minutes to output it.)

Well, you can't please everyone! LOL..

This makes me one person closer to getting may hands on one of these!

This is the best footage I've seen come from a $6K investment!

Thanks again Panasonic!

Now the wait..... Man, is it going to be hard

but what about that indoor shot, was that HMI pouring through the window or natural?
Basically natural sunlight coming in through the window on the left of the woman/right of the man, and a Lowel Caselite with two tubes (one tungsten, one daylight) on the opposite side. I don't remember if there was much else.

I was also curious about the other sequences in the other video files, i.e. pool table/bar scene, martial arts sequence, etc.
It's been a long week, I'll try to remember what we did. The pool cue shot was a daylight caselite, and a 650w fresnel bounced into the wall to provide a little front fill. And a lot of smoke. There's a window in the rear left illuminating the bar patrons, and another caselite on the right accenting them. And a 4x floppy blocking some light streaming into the hallway on the right.

For the martial arts, there's one 1200w HMI in the scene, I think it's pretty obvious where that is! :) And exactly opposite, but way way way in the distance, we had a 650w fresnel shining on him to give just a tiny hint of light. I figure there can't have been more than four or five photons hitting him, but it was just enough to lift him out of the complete blackness.

Jarred, Barry, can you give us an estimate on how long it took to dump the footage from the HVX? Not sure what size card you guys had to test with or how you transferred it as well; firewire out from the camera to laptop or external drive. I'm getting an HVX for narrative filmmaking and trying to determine if I need (2) 4gb cards or if (1) will suffice. Thanks!
It took about 4 minutes to offload a 4gb card. I didn't really pay attention, as I'd start the offload and then go back to the shoot. By the time the 2nd card was full, the first one would be done, so then I'd swap 'em back.

Offloading speed depends on your system speed too. If you have a super-fast hard disk, you could probably cut that time down significantly. The fastest it will ever get would be 50 seconds to offload a 4gb card, but you'd need a SATA RAID in order to support the 80mB/sec transfer rate that that would require!

I'd say trying to work with just one card in that circumstance would probably lead to a lot of unnecessary frustration. If you can swing two, get two. One offloading while the other is shooting means that you're never waiting. But if you only have one, you'll always have to wait for it to offload before you can continue, and I bet that would get old *real quick*.

I believe you mentioned that you had your 24" Dell with you.
Well, no, actually I said that unfortunately I didn't bring it with me but that I really, really wish I had!

I should be able to see it on there from WMV next week.

Hey, anybody see the footage from the music video at DVExpo? "Tosh" mentioned it would be shown at the expo and I haven't heard anybody say anyhting about it.
You're talking about the one with the screen shot that Tosh posted? Yes that's being shown in the Panasonic booth. There's three reels of footage -- our 1080p stuff, a 720p reel that has some of ours and some of Michael Caporale's stuff, and then a third reel with Michael's music video on it.

Barry,
How's does Michael's music video look?

Is there a preview available to download?

So you used Vegas to edit that?? Very interesting. Maybe I could get by doing that for awhile.
I thought the footage was great. I have been shooting for 20 years so I have seen great footage and crappy footage. Keep charging on!!!

Wait a minute... you can't record to a P2 card WHILE doing a dump from the P2 card in the camera's other slot to a portable firewire drive in the field, can you? Don't you have to dump during a pause in filming?

If so then I'm on board for two cards.

Thanks Barry, much appreciated. Yeah, I could have easily shrugged off the martial arts sequence as simply having that one visible light source, but I had to ask if there was anything else, and sure enough there was. Great stuff.
Hope you guys are rewarded handsomely for all of your efforts in putting this together; not only for the benefit of Panasonic, but more importantly, for all of us here.

I'm afraid not, thisiswells. With me it was the same. Just to see, if it will be the case, try the MPEG4 480p version here.

Hope it helps!
