workstation to process gh1 footage

Anyone with a Core i7 920 should overclock it. Most all of the 920's can hit 4GHz stable at least, especially the ones sold nowadays. Will need good heatsink/fans/TIM (NH-D14 or Megahalems are examples for heatsink, 2 Zalman ZM-F3 fans are great, and Arctic Cooling MX-3 TIM is awesome). Also will need an overclock capable motherboard.

That's a 50% speed boost from the stock 2.66GHz.

it looks like the 930 is the new champ when it comes to the cpu sweet spot.

prices on newegg
920 - 2.6ghz - $280
930 - 2.8ghz - $295
950 - 3.06 ghz - $570

From what I've seen it doesn't overclock as well. Definitely better at stock speeds though. Also, I believe you can get an i7 920 for $200 at Microcenter if you have one nearby.

That's what's great about transcoding the footage. For around $100 (Neo Scene), I can use edit-friendly AVI's that behave themselves on my $800 Acer Quad tower.

Why should we bother with paying a ton for some kick-ass system just so we can edit troublesome codecs?

Save yourself money and frustration. Just transcode.

I have the quad i7 overclocked to 3.6 ghz and it flies like the wind with no problems with the STOCK heatsink fan.

I have never understood craaaaazy overclocking. Just sell the damn chip with the speed it can go to and include the correct heat sink.

If you buy a cheaper chip... but then spend a gadzillion dollars on some crazy liquid cooling system.. what's the point?

Here is one of the tests:

Some of the clips come out ok (make sure you watch it in 1080p) but there are weird speed changes in some street scenes with people walking thatI did not do, and with the cars and taxis... even with the motion looks right, like with the drug dealer looking guy standing by the pole as people walk by, look at the trees in the background.. interlace artifacts...

I cry... I cry...

Does anyone else here know how to make this work?

Your youtube upload looks good until the daylight city street scene circa 1:54, which has ugly interlacing artifacts. Starting at 2:28 the street scene is better, and at 2:37 the people walking in front of the building entrance look good to me. The running man at 2:49 is perfect, no interlacing. So it's just that one clip from 1:54 to 2:28 that's bad. Do you agree?

If so, then double check your work with that clip. Did you treat that cilp differently in any way? Did you import it into Edius with different settings, or change them after you imported it? Is it the MTS file straight off the camera or did you convert it before?

is it possible to transcode upon import of the files? (from sd card)

and how long (roughly) does it take to transcode an hour of footage? (with say a core2duo 1.5 - 2g cpu or something similar)

I have to import, then transcode. I use 16GB cards, and it might take about 10 minutes to import a full card, then the transcode time takes about as long as the footage. So if I have 30 minutes of AVCHD, then it will take about that long to transcode.

The city street scenes with cars are all screwy.... I imported them the same as anything else, and they have the same 29.97 setting on their properties in a 1080 1920 23.98 project.

In the trim window they play perfectly.. when I play back the project, both in edius itself and after rendering out.. they are screwy.

Are the properties of that clip set to 29.97 or 23.98?
