Working with on-board 5.1 mics

[h=6]I'm pretty much a 100% sure that I'm going to get Sony's NEX-VG20 by now. I am wondering about the on-board Dolby 5.1 mics though. Can anyone tell me if I should expect to be able to use them to capture a wedding reception (speeches and whatnot) like I would have with a shotgun mic? It says that the mics have "exceptional front-side directivity and stereo separation". Sony loves to speak in marketing-speak so I'm never sure of what to make of any of their babble anymore. I know the VG20 is a consumer market camera but I just wish they would talk a little straighter at $1,600. Anyway, sorry for the rant. I'm used to thinking in terms that a stereo mic will give you the separation but that you need a shotgun mic (mono) to have the directional focus. I've never used a 5.1 setup and I'm kinda confused as to how I will be able to make it work for me. Thanks for any replies in advance.[/h]
