Hey all,

got a question on how most people use footage between 2 programs.. for example.. i use vegas to edit and after effects for post production and special effects.. i shoot on an hvx200 by the way .. so

my question is..

lets say i shoot some footage.. copy it from the p2 card to the pc hard drive.. import it into vegas and do a basic edit. Ok .. lets say now i want to take a piece of that edited vegas footage bring it into after effects make a change to it and then bring that changed footage back into vegas.. is there any way of doing this aside from rendering out the footage uncompressed and bringing it back and forth??

also adding effects and colorizing degrades the quality doesnt it? even if you render out uncpompressed.. something tells me my workflow isnt that great.. any advice or opinions please!!

thanx !

If you are going back and forth it's best to render out to uncompressed .AVI or an image sequence. Image sequence is something AfterEffects loves so that's a good option. As long as you do it before any other renders you'll lose the least amount of quality.

Noah,

thanx for the reply , at the moment thats what i do yeah, i meainly render out as image sequences.. i was just wondering if there are other workflow options for such a thing.

Nothing simple that would retain the best quality. Everytime you export to a compressed or lossy codec you're losing a generation. One potential option though not free is going with a codec designed for effects work like Cineform:

but the ultimate workflow won't be much different from image sequences. That's what most of the big vfx houses use- DPX, TIF or TGA sequences for everything.
