workflow question - Premiere Pro

i recently purchased premiere pro (jump in with both feet, I know), and am trying to edit footage from my 7D. when i open it in finder (or quicklook, I guess) or in iMovie, it plays fine. however, if i open it up in premiere it is uber jerky.

details of camera footage: 1080p24 (I have not converted to anything intermediate.)

details of computer: newest iteration of iMac, 3.06 GHz, 8 gb ram, 1 TB HD, 256 MB video card.

should i convert it to some intermediate format for editing purposes?

best wishes,
T

I posted this in the Premiere section, and got no response. I apologize if i am offside of any forum rules.

For the time being your best bet is to convert it to another format for editing using a program such as MPEGStreamclip. If you also have Final Cut Pro installed then your best bet is to convert to ProRes 422. If not then your best bet is to download the Avid DNXHD CODEC from their site and then use MPEGSTREAMCLIP to convert your footage to their CODEC, this retains the quality as well as allows fast editing. Your other option is to download the BlackMagic Decklink drivers and use their MJPEG CODEC. Really just depends on yoru preferences really. This will work for now, but soon, real soon there will be some BIG changes coming along that will make life SOOOOOOO much easier.
