Workflow (good) News

thx

but at least 2k is possible.. i'd like to know if the jump to edit 4k (when available) from the same 4k footage 2k edited (during 2007) is so easy (cc + grading included) or not?

still about 4k offer do you have any prediction?

Codec Question

Codec Question

Ok I may be stepping on a land mine here, and I hope I don't cause too much trouble, but I wanna ask this question.

RedCode is a RAW codec that CURRENTLY requires RedCine to be developed an then output to the codec of choice in your system for editing.

Cineform is also a RAW codec that is able to be edited directly from an edit system like Premiere and then output and/or developed.

So is there a way that Cineform Codec could also be in RED so that we would be able to output to a format that is ready to edit?

I am NOT saying that they are the same. To my knowlege REDCode is 4k and Cineform RAW is 2k, so it's not like one can replace the other.. But it is an interesting concept for adding another measure of choice to those of us who are shooting.

Also perhaps Cineform would be willing to adapt a version of their codec in order to work better inside Red if something like this were possible.

This may be a horrible idea, because it's clear I do not know what I am talking about...But I felt it was worth asking and/or exploring.

filmmaker1977: almost no edit systems can do 4K at the moment. As indicated the RED software is still in development so no numbers are available yet.

It's a bit early to talk about hardware requirements in the same light.

As indicated by Graeme software will be multi-platform.

By the time Red will be released AMD and intel will be way into their quad core processor releases. Setting up a decent dual-processor PC (octacore!) should do quite nicely. BOXX will no doubt be releasing their quad socket quad core PC's (16 cores!). Should handle 4k quite nicely.

thx for the update.. i also have this hope.. even if i'd like hear graeme on that..

What makes you think you NEED REDCINE to edit REDCODE RAW? That's just one way of using the data. You can use it direct if you want. We're all about choice - not forcing you down one workflow path. And we're not ready to spill all the beans on what we're doing.

REDCINE will cost $1,000,000 and need a Cray Super-Computer to run on. Or maybe it will be free with the camera and run on a Mac or a PC. I guess you'll have to wait and see :-)

Not mad. But you've got to allow me my sense of humour - especially here on DVXUser.

We have a lot of plans for REDCODE, and how you'll edit with it, use it, archive it, transcode it etc. etc. and we're just not ready to give out details. However, we do want you to know that we've thought about all the above.

Graeme

Sense of humor from a programmer... This is a very frightening thought.

Just watch guys, his idea of a "funny" will be to rotate all the images 180 degress on output and call it REDown.

Jay

:)

Damn - you've figured out the secret "Australian" mode for the camera :-)

Remember there's the REDCODE BLACK option for shooting in very dark places. It just makes the entire image totally black, so you get infinite signal to noise ratio, and infinite video record time, with zero compression artifacts :-)

Ok.. Now THAT'S damn funny! :nads:  :2vrolijk_08:

Mr. Nattress, three questions:

1) Will there be REDCODE WHITE option for shooting in very sunny places and will it work similar to REDCODE BLACK?

2) Will REDCODE BLACK & WHITE be able to combined with the secret Australian mode?

3) Will REDCODE BLACK allow higher framerates than 120p?

Guys theres no harm in asking or wondering about things for workflow, that is good and red are listening. Red may have a small team but it is a hugely talented team.

Things do move fast in the computer world so its ludicrous to tie things down at this stage. Look at the options on computer processors just now due core now, three months down the line quad core.

Once the camera ships it will have the "Nattress midas touch" written all over it and it will be awsome. Stop worrying this guy is two steps ahead of the rest of you (me thinks) relax as Jim says (as i bubble up with pure excitement). I said before and repeat, i really feel for you guys just now, some of you have spent years hoping one day you just might get a chance to use what the best in hollywood use and now it is going to happen. If red stopped now and produced the camera with all that it has it would be great. What i find astonishing is Jim Jannards passion is driving him to ensure he "over delivers" an even more trully remarkable camera.

Graeme: The chameleon code will do fine for me. Predator kind of thing suits red!

Yes, REDCODE BLACK allows for infinite frame rate too, for super slomo. You can also have any resolution you want. It's fabulous.

REDCODE WHITE was found to be unreliable unless in close proximity to the Sun, at which point the camera melted and further development was abandoned. Sorry.

Sorry Graeme but YOUR WRONG 100%

Red did NOT melt it changed colour and evolved into something else. We all know red is indestructable:)

Hm... unbelievable!
But if you store infinte framerate at infinite resolution, REDCODE BLACK will certainly have banding problems, or not?

*sigh* there goes the prototype...

If anyone wants, I can post a large sample QT made from REDCODE BLACK for downloading. The two companion audio tracks are recorded in REDCODE MUTE.

Due to the overwhelming interest in all things RED, I'm thinking of selling this sample clip on ebay with a $17,500 starting bid...

DRAT! I was going to take advantage of the API to create redCODE-ICARUS (Little red, cause it's an external plugin.). hmm. Maybe I can just sell a mandatory parachute accessory.
