Safecon 2007 here was just great! I was invited to help on a project to produce a video for the weekend of flight here in Pomona, CA.

We had some rough times!! We shot the first day, all day long and edited at night from 7pm-2am. Woke up at 7:30am and shot again, only this time one person went out while the other edited the footage. same thing for 3rd day. at last we had 3 tapes to edit but it was gradual. It came down to 2:15pm and the video was expected at 7:45pm to be watched at the banquet ceremony.

So being me, i rendered in QuicktimeH264 with mpeg4 audio(128kpbs). It was perfect! WRONG! the video played to about the 10th min mark and the audio just dropped! We had a faulty rendered video! adding that it took exactly 2hrs to render it. It was 5pm and panic was in the air! So i took a shot again in the dark hoping it would work.

I tried rendering as Uncompressed Microsoft AVI. the file was about 80GB and simply didnt play! VLC, MPC, WMP, none of them could play the file. so simply put, i had lost 30mins of render precious time!

I tried again, Quicktime, No compression, and about 80GB in size. I got an error at the final second when the video was been finished. "Error, could not create file." Lost another 40mins! it was getting late and the banquet was close to starting.

so it came close to the end since we had wasted some time previewing the video and other time trying to see why the video dropped the audio.

finally we were out of time! literally! We decided that we were going down fighting.

We used Premiere to play the video out of the timeline. Used the Project Monitor, rearranged the workspace for the window to fill the entire screen and played it from that with In/Out points set.

I could have approached this workflow completely differently now that i am out of the dark forest. I could have rendered in another format, maybe used apple lossless for audio. or rendered in xvid, divx, mpeg2, output to m2t. whatever but thats too late. they enjoyed the freaking video despite all the technical problems.

Summary of my fun weekend.
------------------------------------
- Editing into the weee hours of morning(2am)
- 39.6GB total mess of video
- 2 juped 80GB video files
- Moving AIFF audio from a mac lappy to win32 desktop, having to convert to M4a then to Wav.
- Editing in an Recreational Vehicle(RV)
- Power loss in the middle of editing, Circuit breaker reset, rewiring the entire airport for power ;) just a little portion of a Hangar only.
- Riging the RV tv for audio since we didnt bring any speakers.
- Finally bringing the desktop to the banquet for video presentation.

Overall, the entire event was pleasant. We could have had better luck with the project but for now, it was a start.

Proud to have done it with the A1.

sounds scary... i've heard nightmare convention stories with much less pleasant endings. glad you were able to achieve playback.

how bout a link to the video?

Premiere Pro is known to have some issues with conversion to h.264, although it could be for any number of reasons. Generally, I've gathered that Premiere's encoder isn't always reliable or puts out the best quality.

One big mistake you made was trying to encode uncompressed and then actually playing it. It typically takes a very fast RAID system to deal with uncompressed HD.

Maybe next time try DIVX or WMV. I've had great cross-platform results with DIVX HD and the encoder is super cheap.

latest episode of Jericho on CBS talks about Embry Riddle University. same school that was involved in the filming of the project last week.

PCIFA Safecon 2007 was awesome. Without farther interruption, below is a link to the final video.

video: 270MB
resolution: 640x360
data rate: 2.28 mbits/sec
duration: 16:29

its a streaming video, so give a few seconds to buffer then you can watch as it loads from the net. enjoy!
