woow ... maybe one of the best video...

Are you saying that couldn't have been shot with a 7D or are you noting that nobody has a 7D to "try that with"? ;-)

Aboslutely beautiful BTW.

I was just kidding around. I'm sure the 7D could do a good job too. But they might not look the same. I'm seeing a different look to the two cameras. Which is ok. Neither which is bad by the way.

Oh I agree. I shot a short executive opener for a wiki last week with the D90. Across the desk with the 50mm prime in available light...shaded trees out the window behind talent. Very nice bokeh...very warm colors...no problems syncing sound with the Edirol H9 and an old wireless lav. Quick, clean shoot and I think everyone's going to love the look. Only problem is I decided to shoot a wide shot of the talent at the desk after I had finished the narrative and when I killed LV, it wiped all my settings so it was back to getting everything right with all the damn D90 tricks. I got lucky and things matched okay but I will say I'm sure looking forward to manual controls.

It's nothing special really. Just your typical talking head for two minutes. It only lives behind the firewall IYKWIM. It really made for a good looking talking head.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the kind words.

I was just lurking around here and found a thread with my own work in it... Awesome!

awesome waht was your workflow, lighting setup?

What did you use for editing and color correction etc..?

Hey JonE5,
The lighting setups varied from shot to shot, but if you have a specific shot or sequence in mind I could better explain it. However, I use Tungsten Fresnel light and a couple old ellipsoidal lights. My kit looks like this 4(150wt), 1(300wt), 1(650wt)-fresnel 2(750wt) ellipoidal.

For the workflow, I brought the clips into mpeg streamclip and converted to AppleProRes, .mov files. I then opened the files in Final Cut Pro, edited, 3-way CC filter, and some Magic Bullet Looks on a couple shots. I then exported as .mov AppleProRes and brought the files back into mpeg streamclip to convert to H264/MP4.

oh, and I used mattsand's D90 Rescaler. Thanks Matt!

dam, i love the look you achieved, its so professional looking.

Can you take a look at some footage i shot for class, it was only a quick 1 hour exercise so i didnt have any sort of extra lighting, but i was happy with some of the shots.

Can color correction/grading help me achieve more of a film look?

Well Im not exactly knowledgeable when it comes to color correction. I just tinker with the image until it looks cool. I normally bring the black value down and try to even out the RGB scale(3wayCC).

It might be hard to color correct your video into a "film look" because the light in the video is flat and without shadow. I liked your video and think you are on the right track, but the key to the look I achieved had to do with lighting. It may be possible to adjust the lighting in After Effects with masks and lights but its gonna take some time and could come out funky. Best of Luck!

Hello DanLiffick, here is our back and forth on vimeo :

"this is f*cking great! What stabiliser system was used in the car? Good work!"

"thanks... the interior shots were handheld with a pistol grip. For the exterior I took some rope and a pillow and tied the d90 to the hood with a polarizing filter."

Instead of answering back on vimeo i want to stay here. Please could you post a photo of the hood setup, pretty interested on how you got so little jello.

Thanks!

can you tell us what pistol grip you used? How much was it?

IM looking to get something like that if i can obtain for less than $50 or so

Hey pveal,
Sorry, I don't have any pictures of the set up, but here is a more detailed description..

I took a tripod head and placed it in the middle of a pillow. I then folded the pillow sides up to the tripod head and strapped them in place with bungee cords.

I then took a towel and wrapped it around the pillow/tripod head and bungeed it down. The tripod head should have a snug fit. If it doesn't you might want to wrap some bungee around the tripod head as well.

Next, I weaved some rope through the side fenders and tied the pillow down.

I didn't do a bunch of takes with this setup because I was really nervous. However, driving under 35mph and on pavement was enough for the shot I needed. I hope this helps!

Jone5,
The pistol grip I used was from an old 16mm K3 camera. I would check some online camera stores or I bet you could make one yourself for under $50.

Yes cool, i have one of those, maybe the shoulder extension mount could come in helpful too?

The pillow trick is definitely worth trying as i'm going to be putting the D90 (the cursed D90, the jello swine, the uncontrollable whore of the new breed) on a horse n' cart, so perhaps that will work well.

Thanks for the info.

LOL thats really cool. I was so excited when I realized I could use the grip/arm extension on my d90! I had to buy a small adapter but that was only $5.

Another option would be to buy a cinesaddle. They are kinda expensive (compared to the pillow) but will probably yield better results on a horse n cart.
