Wooden Shoulder Rig

Very clever follow focus. Reminds of a line from Galaxy Quest:

I need a shoulder mount with follow focus.

Well do you have a rudimentary lathe?

paraphrasing.

greeches, did you do that or did you find this and share?

When I first read the title I though how lame, but as first impression often go I was wrong.

Not sure about the "wood" mount, but when you see how they take it from basically a tree branch and make this that was cool. The follow focus looks like it works well for that lens but might be problematic for other lenses but very clever concept.

Plus it was a good video.

Thanks

Very cool focus concept. I would like to see someone implement that in a less wooden design (no offense). I did admire the woodmaking however.

Yeah, the FF design should be "professionalized" immediately! Not for the film filks, but like he did on a zoom for run´n gun work - very interesting concept!
Some additional locking mechanism against accidental changing the focus would be nice though, but maybe it´s enough to make the turning of the grip very tough...

Wow! I think it's cool and extremely dumb of you to share that. Extremely cool to see the process and the great result. That follow focus is an incredible idea and the fact that it was handcrafted in such a way is awesome.

Extremely dumb because you could have sold that idea and the rig and made lots of money. Now I'm sure someone will steal the idea from you.

By the way, the video of the crafting is shot so well. Great work on that. You might want to pull focus faster though or cut around it. Also on your intro video, the blown out background is painful to watch. I know you were trying to expose for yourself in shadow but you might want to point the camera the other way next time. Great stuff though, thanks for sharing.

I didn't film it, just sharing.

I don't find it dumb at all, as this community is built around others sharing their findings and tests with the community.

RedRock started on here, sharing (initially) their tests...

I hope he has a patent for that follow focus...I can see one of the rig big boys grabbing that concept and running with it

great work! yeah! theres a lot of greedy capitalists lurking around.. they'll steal that idea for sure and sell that.

This is yet another example of how we are still in our infancy and that there are MANY improvements yet to be made. I will be SHOCKED if this doesn't get jumped on by MANY people. :) Way to go!

It´s a nice industrial arts/woodshop project . I especially like his fathers poetic choice of using only one piece of curved branch, however the design of bending around his back w/o any counterweights is null. And the focus assist would probably be much less functional than focusing with your fingers on the ring....like in the old days. The turning wouldn´t be proportional . As you turn the handle , it would spin the lens at different amounts according to where in the cycle you were. And as for the idea of stealing a patentable idea , well.... gears and pulleys and such have been common intellectual property for centuries . And then there´s the impossible to overcome reality that it´s heavy . It´s made of wood for goodness sake . I don´t understand the need or desire to burden the camera with unnecessary weight when you´re moving . I think the whole concept of using a traditional followfocus , as seen on the runandguns rigs for sale is ludicrous . It´s very appropriate if you´re using a tripod but if you´re moving , I´d forget all the extras , focus manually . You would be surprised at how agile and nimble and responsive your fingers can be.

Yeah Redrock shared... then sold stuff at high prices, reason why you, I and others make their own rigs.

Wood has a similar S/W ratio to metal in many situations - no reason for it to be heavy

It would appear to me that the wood creates a very appropriate counter weight and operating the FF without moving the hands from the handles that keep stability is the only way to go

My own experiments with using FF of that nature dont give enough throw for many lenses however
