With the announcement of the Canon T2i/550D What Do You Expect 6 Months From Now?

Double system is the way to go. Period.
Forget about XLRs on a DSLR, to be a bit uncouth, Tits on a Boar.
These are not, repeat NOT ENG camcorders, they are stills cameras that happen to record video. Not very well at the moment, but that may improve if Canikon decide it's worth their while and if the cost can be absorbed.
Understand this, the vast majority are sold to stills photographers who, by and large regard video as a sideshow and absolutely WILL NOT pay extra for something they regard as irrelevant, however much people here may want it.
So, if it is economic to improve the video side (And it may well be, let's hope so) then it will be improved, else forget it, and as for Canikon being threatened by Red, don't make me laugh, Canon alone could buy Red out of petty cash.

Video HD capture is the ONLY reason I will be buying this camera. I can now have a 1080p 30fps camera that I can do weddings with at an extremely low purchase price and knock off my competitors with the high HD wedding video prices. I already have Canon lenses from my 30,40 and 50D cameras, so my only other items to get are just a good led on camera light and a bracket. Like one said before, the video feature alone is making people enthusiastic about this camera. My one and only concern is that it does not have CONTINUOUS recording due to the file limit size. Once that issue is resolved, I'm buying 2 of them.

Dave, I believe the proper name is "Panacanikony" as we have to remember Panasonic and eventually Sony to be in the same situation. :D

Please don't. People already undervalue this stuff. If you want to keep making a living doing it then stay in line with your competitors and compete on quality of work instead. Nobody wants the market saturated with lowballers who eventually put everyone and themselves out of business because suddenly no one can make a decent living wage from it.

Personally I do corporate work, but I know how fickle consumers can be.

Sorry but you're going to be waiting a VERY long time, it's just not in Canon's interest. They don't want to be stuck with the EU camcorder tax, and I think that unlike Panny they won't make different models for EU / Non EU markets, which is why us PAL people got stuck with 30fps on the 5D.
Dave

30fps on the 5D had nothing to do with PAL/NTSC, in fact, quite the opposite. The 5D was 30p because it wasn't intended for use with any television standard. It was designed to be used for web video. Tim Smith of Canon said that's why they went with 30, because the internet doesn't care about PAL or NTSC, and that's also why it's 30.000 instead of 29.97.

Every professional photographer I know is experimenting with video right now because of these DSLR's. There is an overwhelming need for content which represents one of the few bright lights in terms of revenue. All the agents that I have met in Europe are asking their photographers to try and produce something in video. The art buyers at advertising agencies are asking for this. These micro internet projects are the only solid income amidst the downturn of large budget productions. The reason there is hostility among some photographers is because they are essentially being asked to change. Multimedia content is the only hope for journalists and a rising source of interest in advertising circles. These DSLR's will continue to evolve because that is where the market is going. I guarantee that the first medium format / digital back manufacturer who provides video with the added detail and dynamic range of their larger captor will make a fortune. It would be the first opportunity to expand their diminishing market in years because they would be able to look beyond the photographer to the videographer as well. It doesnt matter that they will be pixel binning, skipping lines, are only producing HD and using every technical trick under the sun. If they can provide greater perceived image quality and dynamic range they will be the next IT thing. Otherwise they are dying as businesses and they know it.

Medium format is a different animal that may not be benefial for video work beyond increased resolution. The decreased DOF may be harder to work with, along with larger lenses.

I remeber years ago reading something about James Cameron saying that IMAX wasn't his format of choice because it had different characteristics. I can only assume he was talking about the DOF.

Quoted somewhere above : "Nobody wants the market saturated with lowballers who eventually put everyone and themselves out of business because suddenly no one can make a decent living wage from it."

It just so happens that I was charging professional prices because I am a professional in my field. But in CRAIGSLIST, there are them wannabes that are really amateurs that buy a digital SLR and lowball us professionals. I'm sorry, but I got to survive in these hard economic times. Ask any photo studio or video media event company and most will have a sad tale to tell. Yes, I am lowballing prices but I am not an amateur, I do this for a living. Either the prices are low or you starve. I did not start the fire !

I understand. I don't know your story so I should not have assumed. I kinda thought about that after I posted.

Best of luck to you. :)

That's OK. Last month I asked an old retired photographer what in his opinion was the main cause of many studios decline over the past 6 years. He paused for a short while and said that a combination of the internet and affordable automatic digital cameras. I thought for a moment and realized he was 100% right. He was the same photographer who in 1973 averaged 80 weddings a year and had 2 children, wife, and fully paid his house in 15 years. Try doing that today.

Do people even check portfolios anymore? I would never hire a guy without seeing his work. However, I would totally hire a "lowballer" if I liked his previous work. But I guess there is a market for amateurs. I've seen a few weddings where the photog wasn't really getting any great shots and the couple didn't seem like they cared and were also the type to get the cheapest available.

Yes, absolutely, it's these same amateurs that sweet talk the bride into liking their work. I know a few of them that show photos and videos that they didn't even shoot themselves in order to impress. Craigslist is full of newbies that want to get into the glitz and glamour of this lucrative business and even doing it for free in order to gain experience. If they really want to gain some good experience, work for free next to a professional as a second shooter, let the bride hire a pro at pro's prices. In other words BACK OFF !We pros have worked out buts off over the years for knowhow and expertise. I like to see the bride's reaction when she views the work after the fact and the shooter's excuses for the garbage produced. Sure there will be a few good photos in the bunch, but even a blind squirrel will eventually find a nut in the dark.

I guess most here would prefer democracy over a dictatorship, or?
So why all the whining? The digital age has brought democracy to picture taking, be it photos or video. Don´t wanne be the spoilsport here, but the situation you´re describing has always been around. It´s not that a SLR was unafordable 20 years ago, so there always have been people, who got one and just fired away.
Many great artists have started this way. Many great photos were taken with "toys" like the Yashica T5/Eagleeye, while some pseudo creative average photo-joe was taking standard pictures with a Nikon proSLR setup.
Finally we should all just be honest and admit that a lot of filming or photo jobs can be done be most shooters with a basic understanding of the craft of picture taking.
Where it comes to the ART of picture taking, is where the wheat seperates from the chaff... Just my 2c, of course...

Funny thing is, this sort of question pops up all the time over in The Amateur Photographer's forums. The answer always comes back "Don't do it, it's too specialised". Most of the forum members can produce damn high quality work, every bit as good as a "Professional's", but the "Once Only" aspect of weddings is too critical. There's no "Oh don't take the poor pro's bread-and-butter" attitude, if the pro can't produce results as good as the amateur then he shouldn't be in the business.

well this thread strayed...to another planet ! Go to Wedding.com and you will find all your answers ...before the vows !

Now back on track - I predict Nikon and Canon offering an attachable EVF for video DSLR's . Canon will continue with the 60d w/articulating LCD and the new EVF making it the best in both worlds ! Nikon will still be trying to figure out 1080. Everyone and their dog will release EVIL cameras this year . A few from Samsung and Sony , and more from the m4/3 guys. Red will continue to talk us to death. That's the next 6-8 months . If you want more it requires a paypal account !

In 6 months from now I predict the mirrorless SLR a la GH1 with more manual controls, pro features in the audio dept., a high resolution small clip on viewfinder that puts the eye right on it ,full 1080P 29.97fps continuous capture video without file size limitation, 64 and 128 GB media that are affordable (really affordable),
a fast 10- 70mm or thereabouts F2 lens ( most likely made by Olympus) , a really good powerful compact LED light about the size of a pack of cigarettes that throws out more than 800 lumens or lux in video mode and also has a regular TTL photo flash in it, and finally an affordable wireless transmitter and receiver for photo/video.

Craigslist advertising amateur wedding photographer and videographer here (4 years, now). I hope there will be a DSLR that accepts miniDV tapes ( I still love tapes). Basically I predict more micro 4/3rd lens. I predict that the brand DXG will come out with a DSLR ( the brand is huge in Asia)
