Wireless Lavalier Mic Set Up

I need to purchase a wireless lavalier mic set up for an upcoming project I'll be doing. I am familiar with using the Sennhesier ew112-p G2 set up on a Panasonic HMC150. I would like to have an identical set up (transmitter attached on camera, plugged in via XLR/bodypack transmitter attached to mic), but if I could save some money that would be nice; I plan on selling this mic set up once the project is complete. It must have the capability to attach to a camcorder via XLR!!! Thanks.

If you don't want to keep it long-term, have you considered renting? It'll cost you a whole lot less.

Buying now, knowing that you'll be selling it soon, means that you'll take a pretty huge hit on the investment since you won't get full price back out of it. What you lose between buying and selling may be about a week's rental of the same system. And do some reading around the Audio forum, and perhaps use the search function. Common wisdom is that the Sennheiser G3 system (replaced the G2) is the least expensive you can buy and still get acceptable results. I tested a Sony UWP-V1 system and was not impressed, and I have heard very poor reviews of the Audio Technica 1800 series.

Thanks for the input. I'm not sure how renting would work out since I will sort of "be on call" throughout the month-long project. I'll look into some local rental rates though.

G2's nothing to sneeze at of you can find a used one...

Very true. I hope it didn't sound like I was suggesting otherwise. I own two of the G2 systems and they're both still going strong. I haven't upgraded to the G3 systems because I haven't needed to.

That said, rental may still be a wiser decision than purchasing. Rental costs for extra gear should be factored into your production costs covered by the client. If you're having to purchase something, only to sell it off after, you're backed into a very unfair corner by the client. As for rental costs, depending on where you're located, you might want to check trewaudio.com for US and Canada. They're Nashville-based with offices in Toronto and Vancouver. They'll ship rentals pretty much anywhere. Check their rates for weekly and monthly... the G2 system rental is pretty cheap per day.

Don't know if this one is good also ?

It's a bit of "strange" prices though. 150 for a recorder is quite expensive... 35 for a 442 is rather "cheap" then...

In Belgium when I rent SD744, SD442, 2 wireless mices (micron with sanken cos11 lav), schoeps CMIT5U and cables, I pay about 290 $ (and if you have a VAT nr, you pay only 240 $ because of the "tax system".
That's for one day...for 2 days it's 290 x 1,4, for 6 days it's 290 X4 ....

If you really want to sell-when-done, try a $100 AT88w - it's a consumer camcorder-market 2 channel wireless setup & you can get a 1/8th to XLR transformer (AT even makes one specifically for it, $30ish). I got one for my kids and later learned it's considered sort of a "crash mic" by some hollywood pros, for rain or dust or muddy situations. Works well enough that I've used it to backup mics. And it's a super-handy thing to have for music videos, getting a board feed into your camera for synch without being cabled. Don't laugh til you try it....
