An iPhone App was just released today that controls ANY Canon EOS DSLR without having to connect a computer:

DSLR.Bot v1.0
Control your DSLR camera from your iPhone.
Four different modes of operation.

Features:

Shoot
Long Exposure
Time Lapse
Movie Mode

An infrared transmitter must be plugged into the headphone jack of the iPhone for this application to work. This can be purchase from our online store at DSLR.Bot Infrared Transmitter or by following simple DIY instructions found at the Instructables website, you can make one yourself.

Shoot
Trigger your camera with Shoot or 2 Second Delay button.

Within shoot mode you can enable a GPS Log function that records your location at the time the shot is triggered. This can GPS log can be exported and synced with the photos triggered by the camera.

Long Exposure
Take full control of your cameras long exposure ability and extend the time of your exposures.

Time Lapse
Create time lapse sequences with the ability to specify the amount of shots to be taken and the duration for each shot interval.

A Rapid Fire function is added giving a continious burst of shoots, the speed in which your photos are taken are depndant on the camera specifications.

Movie Mode
Control the Start and Stop recording in Live View mode. A Shot list is generated when the recording is triggered. The shoot title can be edited for specific shots. If recorded videos are deleted on the camera, you can also delete the shot on the list with a swipe gesture over the unwanted shot. With once press over a shot list item you can mark the shot with a tick. The shot list can be export via email. A total shot time is also provided to alow you to monitor how much footage you have taken.

THIS IS GREAT IMHO

What kind of distance will the IR remote function at? It needs to be line of sight?

W are looking for a remote to trigger video record while wing mounted, but we will not have line of sight. Are there any other alternatives out there?? We have tried the canon wireless remote, but it is not getting it done.

What camera specifically?

Most Canon EOS cameras use a simple 2.5mm (not 3.5mm!) stereo jack for remote shutter.

"Shield" is common, connect it to "Ring" for "half hold" ("focus"), connect it to "Tip" for "trigger". You can wire in a simple button from shield to tip and use it to fire the trigger. You don't have to use the "half hold" feature to pre-set focus if you don't want to.

I need something like this.

I do industrial shoots for a mega moving company (like on the show Mega Movers, we were featured on the Science Channels' Heavy Metal Taskforce moving a 1300 ton lift boat).

Anyway I'm shooting this by myself and would love to set cams up around the job site to do timelapses of the moves and be able to control the cams from a distance as some are located on big structures and once the move starts I can't get to the cam to start the timelapse. I usually get a guy from the crew that's not doing anything to hit record on a cheapo DV cam but would like to get some decent DSLR's to do the job and be able to start all of them remotely.

I haven't had a huge chance to REALLY play with it because I've been dealing with some deadlines. The App and attachment is functional, but needs some work IMHO. I've never used the IR port on my 5DM2 so I can't compare it to Canon's remote. Some issues I noticed initially were:

1. In video mode, if you press "record' on your iPhone and the 5D IR port doesn't pick up the signal, the App still thinks it's recording and starts the timer.

2. Same as above on "stop" - these 2 issues will drive you crazy if you don't have access to the 5D's LCD!

3. Still testing actual working distance, seems to be hit and miss - I hear this is always an issue with IR ports?

While the wireless attributes are great if we can get them working flawlessly, I believe the App (in it's current state) is best suited to control your 5DM2 via iPhone, when it's in hard to reach places - attached to a long IR extension (with the LEDS mounted directly in front of the cameras IR port).
