Not sure if this has been suggested yet (don't have time to read all 15 pages of suggestions), and I'm not sure if this would be cost-prohibitive.
The thing that always worries me about direct-to-disk solutions for cameras is the loudness of the hard drives. DV Firestore drives are relatively quiet, but to have enough throughput in a hard drive to allow direct recording of 2k or 4k images, even if these are being recorded as image sequences not video, the hard drives will likely need to be very fast, and therefore, rather loud. A certain amount of dampening will likely be used, but in a small space or documentary "mic-mounted-on-camera" situation, the sound of these drives, especially when mounted directly to the camera like the RED's magazines will supposedly be, may be just too loud.
So, the ability to record the images wirelessly to a drive array in another room or soundproof enclosure would be an excellent solution, though the cost of a wireless RF system might be prohibitive (we're talking much higher sustained bandwidth than Bluetooth here.)
