Windows 8

Funny!

You have to OPEN windows in order to HEAT the house!

TOO FUNNY.

I have a laptop running XP that spends the day running at 80% CPU looking for viruses and trojans. I won't have to turn on the heat in my house this year.

This is the final straw for me, I'll be switching to Linux for my next system.

Well if you're looking for a good distro, give Nexradix a try... (shameless plug...)

I've used Linux for many years now, and won't consider buying a new version of Windows until they remove Product Activation.

People who think its cool to bash Windows will always do so, regardless of the situation. I can't imagine 8 will gain any traction on desktops or laptops, but I could be wrong. Looks like a great OS for tablets and things of that form factor. The interface is a step ahead of Apple in my opinion. Can't wait for my Windows 7 phone.

I'm very happy with Pro 7 but 8 could be nice if the footprint is smaller than Windows 7 and I'm not "forced" to live in the cloud.

I think Windows 8 is the first innovative full-featured OS in several years. If it really can cover both mobile and desktop as well as the critics are saying it does, it's going to be huge.

So I guess the rule of developing something to do two different things won't be as good as designing something to do one thing, doesn't apply here. Developing something to do two things divides up the resources over those two things as opposed to putting it all towards one.

Why is it so difficult for them to develop a separate OS for tablets? Seems like they're just trying to save man-power and capital.

I'm actually looking forward to Windows-8. After the Vista fiasco, Windows-7 was really good. Pretty stable and reasonably efficient. I think Microsoft is on the right track. I've played with the Windows phone and came away impressed, so if this is a move further along in that direction I think it can be good.

Having said that, I'd jump to Linux in a heartbeat if they could ever get their fecal matter aggregated sufficiently to implement some standards. Then maybe we could get some decent software ported. Non-geek software that is. With some documentation and such. But I'm not holding my breath :)

In the mean time, I'll keep running Windows 7, 64 bit with CS5.5 Production Premium, Audacity, and a couple of games and not worry too much about all this. You know, it's not like you have to upgrade. If you don't like it, you're free to continue using whatever works for you.

Until they stop supporting it in 2013.

Yeah, but I'll worry about that in 2013. Maybe then I'll just go back to XP, they'll support that until 2014.

If you look at the article I linked earlier, they have a tablet flipped in it's side, plugged into a dock, with a keyboard and mouse. I think that's what they're going for... one device to rule them all. It's a tablet when you're on the go, a desktop/laptop when you need to write that report. And I think it's less trying to write a new interface as it is trying to integrate their current two-- Win7 and Win Phone 7-- into one. If they can actually pull that off... and I have no illusions that they will... I think it's going to be huge.

I tend to agree with Networker. While I'm a Mac guy, I thought Windows 7 was a big improvement over Vista, and it looks like 8 is a step in the direction of the future. Plus if you can make it the same interface as Windows 7 with a few clicks, there shouldn't be that much for Windows users to worry about (sans bugs, viruses, etc.)

I think a bigger issue may be that MS has a lot of ground to make up on iOS and Android I think, but we're still early in the game here.

Until they stop supporting it in 2013.

Who cares? You can still use it like you do today. It will not stop working in 2013.

Since I use it on my workstation only, there is no real improvement over 7, as far as I can see.
Or did I miss something?

Regarding all that virus talk, your NLE or any other computer you work/make money with should never be connected to the Internet.
So you don´t need any anti-virus software running in the background and you also can turn of a lot of stuff that is eating resources.

On the other hand, I have my web-surfing computer running with an unpatched XP-pro since donkeys years, and never had a real virus problem.
