Windowed-4K for 2:35

This is taubkin´s excellent idea:

"They could actually come up with a 2:35 format and codec, using a masked 4K capture. They capture only the part of the sensor in the middle, thus saving quite a few pixels in the compression. Using REDCODE, maybe they could stream the 2K-ish 2:35 image more easily... We could edit it easy and just export to letterbox 4K in the end..."

I think it is such a good idea that I wanted to chatch the attention of the RED crew and see what they (and the rest of You guys) think about it. :)

Regards
Hans

Hey Hans.. i think that would be a great option for the codec to allow all ratios do that, to be a crop... and I think they are watching closely.

Hey what can I say... Sometimes that does happen... :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

About getting their attention, I'm pretty assured it's not hard. Their people (and Jim himelf) spend so much time in these boards, I almost get concerned they are not working enough on the production... :)

Seriously, it's just awesome to have them listening. That's what this site is all about, of course... Afterall, the DVX is not just the best camera in it's class for nothing...

"With eyes of a hawk.

I have to quote my favorite character in The Simpsons: "...Excellent...!" :)

It sure does. :) As I said, great idea. :)

As for the RED-Team, the fact that they do listen to us makes them bound for success. They are going to give us what we want...not trying convince us "This is enough for you. Buy it!". :)

Thanks Jarred - like I say, we watch like a hawk. We've certainly talked about windowing like this in 4k, so it's a great validation of an idea when it's independently suggested. And RED have installed me with the latest human upgrades so I no longer need to sleep, hence my ability to do RED, and post here, and get all my work done.

Graeme

Just make sure it's 2.40:1, or technically 2.39:1.

2.35 went away back in the earlier 70s.

I hope that those human upgrades are an option that can be ordered with the RED ONE.. this sleep thing is really wasting alot of my time.

2:35 is 2:39, as far as talking about it.. 2:39 is the standard, but we still call it 2:35. kinda like we call 23.98 24.

And that brings the interesting fact that filmaker's math is so complex, that it's the only science in the world that rounds 2.39 to 2.35 instead of 2.4 .

We can all argue about that, in the end, the window will be the same size... Let's just call it 2.35K!

No mess at all.
For film you name the proportion as the quotient of the width and the hight. Pixels has nothing to do with it.
And Cinemascope (today 2.35:1) is a veiwing format. All it tells us is the proportion of the picture on the screen.

The history of Cinemascope is: they started at 2.66:1 but to have room for optic sound they shrank it to 2.55:1 and later to 2.35:1 were we are today. 2.35:1 is the standard of Cinemascope.

Personally I prefer Tohoscope. Godzilla beats King Kong´s lilly ass anyday! ;-)

my dear Hans but now those crazy people they are saying that is 2.40:1.. today?

wait, and they are saying also perhaps it may be 2.39:1.. actually it is 2.40:1 but it's called 2.35:1.. :crybaby:

welcome! join to the club! i'm there too.. :2vrolijk_08:

please anyone to enlight us!

(and please) you, hey you, hippie! :Drogar-Smoke(DBG): no way!! not now!.. :)

What the heck...give us REDSCOPE and let us be done with it. ;-)

I am confused now. "The most common projection ratios in American theaters are 1.85 and 2.39" -Wikipedia
Is 2.39:1 called 2.35? If so, why?
