GH2 Wind noise from external mic

When i have used my Rode Stereo mic peviously on any cam the mic has performed great and with the wind muff there has been little wind noise but with my GH2 i get terrible wind noise[pardon the expression]using it ,i have adjusted the wind cut adjustment but to my mind it makes no noticable difference, is there something in the sound make up of these cameras causing this problem.<img src="images/smilies/undecided.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Undecided" smilieid="18" class="inlineimg">

It could be you're using your GH2 with the Rode in noisier locations, is it always plugged into the GH2 mic in slot?

Does how you're listening to the results have a big bass boost? HTH.

Cheers.

No i am talking about wind noise with the mic plugged in to the external mic socket like it has always been with various cams,i cant fathom why the wind muff does not stop wind noise like it does on my HV30 which i still have.

Hi,
Can you post mp3 samples of the sound.
Also as I always say. try to recreate the same conditions with tow different cameras. Also try the gh2 in non windy location to see if it is the wind the real problem.
Some of the reasons can be that:
- The batteries of the mic are dying, which may create a saturation effect.
- the wind is stronger that day
- the wind muffed is not properly installed
- the connection between the mic and the camera is not properly plugged.

Thanks for trying to help me Phenixone but none of the possible reasons are probable as the mic works perfect when there is no wind, even moderate wind sounds bad,the rode expensive muff is fitted correctly and if the connection was not properly plugged sound in all situations would be affected but that one is the best possibility,i will send an example later.thanks.

That beach/swimming scene looks like a pretty windy place. The gusts may have overwhelmed the windscreen you have, but it's more likely the mic wasn't plugged in properly and the on-camera stereo mics on the GH2 were active. I know you've said it was plugged in properly, but I did a lot of shooting with my GH2 yesterday and there were a few occasions where I had to redo takes because the external mic plug wasn't attached properly - even though it felt and looked like it was plugged in correctly.

Thanks but the mic not being plugged in properly is not the cause as when ever i record the external picks up bad wind noise,if the mic is not plugged in properly on my GH2 i get no sound at all.

the best way to know which mic the sound is coming from is to tap ted mic with your finger. If the vu meter clips, it means you are tapping the mic that is recording. Also if a mic is plugged a small microphone icon should appear.
I personally don't think there is anything wrong with your shots, it's just super windy.

the sound you are hearing is a the result of a physical action on the microphone (opposed to digital in the camera) and is due to the wind pressing on the membrane of your mic. I don't think the camera has anything to do with the issue. If you want to make sure it is not the camera, bring the two cameras at the same moment and record a sample on both chicly one after the other in the same conditions without moving the mic.

Just making sure, the wind cutter you are referring to is http://goo.gl/gjPYx ?
Have a look a Rycote website for a good reliable wind cutter. (they are the best)
Also do a test with and without the wind muff, to see the difference. Your wind muff may be working but still be overwhelmed.

Also a rule often is that if you can feel the wind on you, then you will automatically get the wind sound.

...if the mic is not plugged in properly on my GH2 i get no sound at all.

I've had situations where the mic not being plugged in properly created nasty static noise, and others where it was just silence. I just shot a bunch on on-camera mic shootouts, and having the on-board mics still being active was the most common issue.

Thanks thats the muff Phenixone, its nothing to do with the mic not being plugged in correctly 100% sure,i will have to live with it and try and use artificial sound if possible where its realy noticeable.
