F35: Will the Odyssey 7Q+ record 12bit 4:4:4 out of F35?

I just read an article that showed the specs of the new 7Q+ and it looks like it'll be able to record 12bit 4:4:4.

Here is a table from the article comparing it to the Shogun.

Will the 7Q+ be compatible with the F35 and be the cheapest option to recording full colour range and bit depth out of this camera?

Not sure if I'm reading the spec sheet wrong!

I bought the 7q (without +) bc of an promoted upcoming 4444 12 bit update for it...Hope they keep this promise

The current state of the 7Q, 7Q+ and Sony F35
1/12/15

7Q and 7Q+ ard identical in terms of the processing capability. The 2 differences are the HDMI is updated and the SDI ports are updated. The difference is not helpful to F35.

Either 7Q or 7Q+ will run into a problem with the F35 because it is a unique Sony pSf and will not work at 12-bit, works fine at 10-bit over 2 SDI lines. (However note some user have had issues of split frames with 2 images on top of each other when recording 10-bit 444 on 7Q, pSf messing up because it's confused by this method of information?)

Aja LUT box was proven by film scientist to fix the pSf problem by taking 2 feeds from IF box at 23.98 12-bit and converting to true progressive signal. Using CD Gemini recorder, the 12bit progressive signal from the F35-LUT Box combo was recorded properly.

It is possible the Aja LUT box will make the 7Q capable of recognizing the 12-bit F35 signal, not proven yet. Only Gemini was tested by film scientist. The real hope of the F35 community is that CD will implement an in-recorder tool like the LUT box that converts the signal from 12-bit 23.98 pSf to a recognizable format. Who can blame CD for not jumping on this right away when the FS700 crowd is demanding so much progress still from the 7Q.

7Q and 7Q+ both have the capability to record 12-bit. The problem with the F35 comes from it's unique use of a progressive segmented frame.

10-bit does not have this issue talking with recorders. Some users have pointed out, the pSf can lead to weird noise when outputting to a quicktime format. 10-bit pSf seems to work just fine on most recorders but I convert my footage into true progressive frames before editing because I am fearful of a media player not having the right code for pSf and the image will looked interlaced.

Ah okay thanks for clearing that up for me yachacha. It's hard to find this information anywhere. I guess I'll have to start saving for a Gemini!

We believe we will soon have the Odyssey7Q and Odyssey7Q+ fully supporting 12-bit out of the F35. One of the forum members here is lending us a camera for some testing.

BTW, that comparison article is pretty good, but there are a lot of things wrong in that chart. I sent a number of corrections to the author and he noted them later in the article, but did not change the chart itself. Just saying', if you wish to use this chart for reference, best to read the entire article. There are some good insights there.

Also, not that anyone has asked, but the other recorder listed does not offer any support for F35. Just so no one is confused.

Yup I'm sending my F35 to Mitch on wednesday. Mitch is the envy of ten hard-core camera nerds who love the CCD sweetness and global shutter of the big weird f35 beast. Who have followed MacGregor, our cult leader, and risked humility from all Alexa and Red users in the pursuit of older interesting looks.

Thank you Mitch!!

Hahaha! All Hail Mac!!

Sorry Mitch I probably should have taken time to crop only the information I needed out of the chart for my question (the 12bit 4:4:4 section) or posted a link to the original article but I'm not sure if it is bad karma to post links to other sites on this forum. Looking forward to seeing how things progress on the 7Q front!

A quesiton to Mitch: I read somewhere in the Odyssey press materials that there would be a cable remote to start/stop recording on the Odyssey. Is it still going to happen? If not (so soon) would you know of an alternative I could use to start recording without the need to take my hand off the handles?

We expect to activate the Remote Port on our next firmware update. We will offer a remote trigger on a cable and will also publish wiring specs should you wish to make your own.

Good News: F35 12-bit support is coming. Testing going well. More info as we get closer.

Mitch is the greatest. Mac is our cult leader but now we must raise a statue of mitch as well at our camera nerd temple.

Come on...

Exactly.
Cult leaders never admit they are cult leaders, because they know it, and they know all their followers are their cult. Duh. Your words are indexed, counted, and retweeted for all camera nerds around the world. Not like the false idols who shall go unnamed, you are the real deal.

Either you accept this responsibility or I'm going to be forced to shoot my next film on a iphone 6 with anamorphic adapters.

*bows down in silence in front of mac shrine next to my collection of used 35mm lens adapters*

Another question to Mitch: Will there be a ProRes 4444 firmware update for the Odyssey 7Q anytime soon? That would be really great!

Thanks a lot,

David
