Will the lcdvf work on gh!???

Just wondering if it will work?? Can't seem to google it into submission so I'm hoping one of the illustrious senior members can set me straight....thanks.

The JAG35 guys got their first shipment of LCDVFs the other day and I was able to play with one before they shipped them all out.

Short answer, No it doesn't work well with the GH1.

A couple of issues related to how it mounts. You have to stick a metal frame on your LCD screen so the LCDVFs magnets can attach to the camera. This frame is small and inconspicuous, but is thick enough to prevent the LCD screen from closing (if rotated so the screen faces the camera body.) Not really a killer issue but just know that you won't be able to close the LCD screen to protect it.

The bigger issue though is that the frame extends down past the bottom of the camera body, preventing you from mounting the camera to a tripod or some other base plate. I think you could cut the bottom of the frame off so it would just be an inverted U shape to get around this. If I remember correctly the LDCVF only has magnets on the sides, so the bottom part of the frame is not really necessary.

Despite these issue, I'm going to get one when the JAG guys get them back in stock (~2 weeks I think) to play around with.

Thanks Dave!!!

Thanks Dave!!!

I think I might be willing to make the gamble my self...Thanks for the input....this is why this forum rocks. Woohoo.

I'm not familiar with the LCDVF, but there may be a better solution than cutting the frame. I have a Z-Finder and the mounting frame also extends below the camera body. I use the Manfrotto 394 quick release adapter to get around this with my Z-Finder and it works fine. It does block the battery door from opening completely, but that's not a huge deal since the batteries last a long time. The 394 might work with the LCDVF too.

Stabilization and more precise focus.

Stabilization and more precise focus.

I figure the eye piece will help stabilize the camera when shooting hand held, and outdoors in bright light the LCD is hard to see and impossible to focus off of.

Unless you're shooting at a low angle wouldn't you just use the EVF? Acts as added stability when handheld and saves you money.

The EVF would work a lot better under certain lighting conditions if there was a large rubber eyecup that fit it. There has been mention of some of the eyecups from the old betacams fitting, but try finding one.

I personally find the magnification of something like the Z-Finder to be helpful. Also having that extra extension to be able to hold the cam a little further away when using a stabilizer is more comfortable when adjusting the cam with my free hand. Diffrerent strokes...
