GH3 Will the GH4 XLR adapter cost $2200?!

Remember? I think you're missing the point of the GH4.
It's specifically a modular 4k video camera that also shoots photographs.

I agree with your assessment. The GH product series has always been video oriented and the '4' is even more so than the previous versions.

for me external power is a killer for this combo, otherwise would get this for sure

For me also - having to rig a battery defeats the purpose of a smaller 4K camera (& a $3,500 price tag for camera & brick) - my BMPC4K arrives next week so I'll see how that goes. The way people are talking it'll be smaller, cheaper and better quality than the GH4 & brick - shame really.

Personally, I hope we see an actual 4k video camera at NAB. This Transformer creature just seems like a pain in the ass to me. More custom aftermarket hardware that goes out of date in a season and I always worry about expensive add ons and the like.

The GH4 does support 4k to the SD card at 8bit 4:2:0. If you want 10bit 4:2:2 then it is brick + external recorder.

And, it seems, you can get 1080p 10bit 4:4:4 from the 8bit 4k 4:2:0 with a transcode:

The two other advantages are a better down conversion compared to binning pixels and being able to shoot, edit and distribute a 2048x1080 true 2k video which to the best of my knowledge no other camera at this price point allows anybody to do. Being able to control the down conversion to 1080p should help reduce alias and moire and improve raw detail. Being able to shoot 2048x1080 means shooting a 1.90:1 aspect ratio instead of 1.78:1 aspect ratio. Also a first at this price point.
