Will RED offer an education discount?

No revolution would be complete without harvesting the hearts and minds of the professors, teachers and students.:) Seriously though, will Red offer an educational discount program for qualified film, tv, and multi-media programs in the U.S, Europe and Asia? Maybe a build your own RED ONE DIGITAL CINEMA package that would run the gamut of camera, storage, lens and accessory options? I think this would be mutually benefical for all the obvious reasons and more -- (strenghtening)craft, economy of scale, saturation of the brand. These are the centers for most of the present and future craftsmen and women. If we have learned anything it would be " get 'em while they are young and the rest will follow."

Cheers!

Well I intend to rent mine out to students at a discounted rate, much like I got student rates when hiring out others' equipment. After all, once you have used Red on your film, you are unlikely to ever want to go back to anything less... so I will undoubtedly grow my business with that in mind!

Good idea! That's also my case.

EDIT -- However, I agree that $17,500 price range is a great deal whatever its future use.

To be honest, I don't know if RED can sell any cheaper without loosing the tiny bit of profit they probably make...
They already said their price tag was about the cheapest they could sell it for.

I think it would make sense, RED seems to intent on winning over the indie community it would only help everyone if you helped students. For 4k 17K is cheap but still hard to come by.

I know, I can't pay it either, but you can still rent it...
We wouldn't want RED to go brooke, don't we :)

IMO RED does have a discount program that is currently offered all students, colleges, indie's , pro's , studio's at $17,500 ....

if your college-school has only hand size camera's (or full size) that they paid under 7K they are not going to be looking at 15K and up camera's ... if your college does have full size camera's that they paid 15k and up then they just might consider RED ... many of the current film schools have paid far above 20K for their camera's ... most film schools/colleges have 17,500 - it all comes down to where they decide to spend it ... your college will have to decide if a RED will contribute more to your education then their current arri/npr/dvcam/dvx.

if you are in hi school or college then 17,500 is alot to come with and IMO you shouldn't be spending 17,500 on a camera - spend it on your education and/or go out and see the world for awhile ...

I kinda doubt a special purchase price for less $.

Does Sony, Panasonic, Arri, Aaton, etc. have student discounts? That's a question, not a statement. I have never heard of student discount on camera hardware but maybe...

However, at the price Red has promised you can bet it will show up for students use at many film schools. And as mentioned many rental houses may have student rates.

I still need a partial hip replacement, but that and all the pain is another story.

Andrew,

For some reason the forum wouldn't let me email you directly but I did leave you a PM about this.

Best,

Steve

I dont know if there will be a discount program or not.. hard to believe the camera could go any cheaper.
