Does anyone know of any good Wide lens for the Panasonic GH1? I tried searching but have been unsuccessful :( Also here comes a noob question... Is there any difference between fish eye and wide lens? :lipsrseal thanks for your time.

If you look further down in this forum you'll see plenty of topics on this. Their is a 7-14mm Panasonic lens which covers the wide end and has little distortion. If you want fish eye, then an 8mm Olympus ZD or 8mm Peleng are pretty fishy.

JESUS CHRIST!!!! O just saw how much the 7-14mm Panasonic cost on ebay...almost a GH1...

Well you did ask for a good wide lens. If you want a better one there is always the Olympus 7-14 at around 1500 euros, don't know what it is in dollars, but a lot.

A good alternative is the Oly 9-18mm 4/3 lens. Much less expensive but with good IQ and it also has a filter thread which the 7-14mm does not.

Cheers,

I think I shall spam Panasonic to create a 10/2.8. Olympus too, while I'm at it. I'm sure E-P1 users wouldn't mind a 10/2.8.

As will any other 14mm lens you can find...in Full Frame 35mm terms, any 14mm lens you put on the GH1 will have a field of view of a 28mm.

Ok? 28mm is pretty wide. What are you shooting?

I guess all things are relative... I've always been a fan of ultrawide. Mind you, that's been for still shooting mainly. Video is a new direction for me but I can certainly see wanting to have the 35mm equivalent of something as wide as 14 to 18mm for landscape and street work. I intend to use the GH1 with my G1 for still work as well as video. I guess the point is that if ultrawide is a part of your toolbox, there's more opportunity available.

Cheers,

Yeah. The only video work fisheye and ultra wide seems to be..ahem, wide spread in, is skateboarding videography.

These are conversion lenses right so they are designed to mount on an existing lens? @52mm would they work with GH1 kit well even with step down ring?

Ben,

You'll always get better results with a specifically designed lens rather than adding more glass to the light path. That part is simple physics.

Cheers,

It might not be "widespread" but some fantastic cinematography has been done with ultra wide angle optics, particularly the works of Wes Anderson comes to mind. personally i find his distorted up close wide angle shots to be some of the most alluring and original of modern cinema. Unfortunately their are quite few extreme wide angle options for the GH1 but at least they are there with the 7-14 up front.
