C100: Wide dr noise

I did a few quick tests today looking at the noise of wide dr compared to the others and it appears its the noisiest gamma of them all in the blacks. some blue noise in blacks as well. Anyone else notice anything similar?

I'm sure no pixel connoisseur but WideDR is what I picked to shoot most everything I've shot so far. It looks gr8 to me.

It is noisy at ISO 5k plus in wide dr. The question is where it gets unbearable. ISO 4k and under the noise is much better and even not noticeable in wide dr mode. If you're going to shoot with zero light it will get very noisy at any ISO but just a little bit of light and the image sings. That's what I found shooting with Wide DR on numerous jobs so far.

I really do not like WIDE DR. It still requires correction so why not go log. I hate the blacks and additional noise. Colors also shift from normal Canon facial tones. I could take the time to do a detailed examination and comparison but a few shoots with Wide DR was enough to convince me. BTW I did these tests at ISO 6400 and beyond.

Wide DR can be useful.

It is the only profile apart from Log that gives you the desirable 12 stops. You can make a custom profile and change the color matrix if you want to shift colors around.

Log is good, but sometimes I can see a benefit in having the curve ramp a little steeper in the beginning so that not all of your image gets stuck below IRE 40. I think the Wide DR gamma is a very good general purpose curve, but I wish I could have more control over black gamma.

I agree with the previous comments that since you have to grade with this curve you might as well use log, but the gamma curve in Wide DR might be better for some highlight situations, and some might prefer the color matrix in Wide DR.

You might try adding a little noise reduction to your profile. Even a low value of 2 or 3 might do the trick, and the softening is barely perceptible. I prefer this to post NR, as that is slow and cumbersome.

What highlight situations could possibly benifit from Wide DR over Canon Log?

I played around with the noise reduction while viewing on a 46" TV and I didn't see much of a difference. It's such big blocky grain that the NR didn't do much and again, I noticed some grain that appeared to be blue in color while shooting a black object. Low ISO's are fine, but I just wanted to point it out to other users for something to be aware of.

Ahh the noise! I had someone shoot a BTS recently on my C100 with a Ninja. I think he was around ISO 2500. The footage isn't incredibly noisy or anything, but there is a definite grain that seemed worse than what I would see on my C300 at the same ISO but in Log. It must have been that damn profile! I should have had him stick to Log, as Wide DR still needs some correction. Looks great, should have been better. Lesson learned I guess.
