as you know, wide angle lens make objects in the frame seem farther away... I'm wondering if I need to get a wide angle lens to achieve this effect, or does the XL2 do this by itself?
Huh? Not sure i understand your question? what kind of effect are you trying to get? A wide angle lens will indeed allow you to fit more in your frame at closer distances, but this isn't so much an effect as it is inherent in the way a wide angle lens works. The Xl2 by itself doesn't actually have anything to do with what you are seeing through the viewfinder. All it is doing is aquiring the image that is projected on its CCD's by the lens. The only way to fit more on the screen at once is to use a "wider" lens. With a more telephoto lens you will be able to fit less on the screen at once, and things will appear to be closer. The only thing I can think of is if you are asking if the stock 20x lens on the XL2 is wide angle. if so, the wide end on the 20x lens is semi wide, but not compared to the DVX. So indeed, if you want a wide angle look with the XL2, you will need to buy a wide angle lens, like the 3x lens, which I think is like $1500. There are other alternatives, but not (as I am informed) for the 20x lens. Maybe you could let us know a little more about the look that you want.
Just to clarify this. The .6x wide angle adapter from century optics has always worked with the XL2 and costs $329. However you cannot zoom through it all the way....only to about 8x.
The Century optics .7x adapter has now been re-engineered and is fully compatible with the XL2 20x lens. It is full zoom through and is classified as a converter and not an adapter. Therefore it is more like $650-$750 for that one.
I use the .6x myself and love it. It is actually much wider than the DVX with this adapter.
So buying a $1500 3x canon lens is not your only option now. $329 can get you just about the same thing.
