Wide Angle Lens with IS?

I'm looking for a wide zoom lens and love the Canon 10-22 but found out it has no Image Stabilization (which I would like for handheld, walking & shooting stuff). I searched around for alternatives but couldn't find any wide zooms with IS. Am I to assume that A) the optics don't allow for it, or B) perhaps there's no need for IS on a wide lens, unlike a telephoto?

Similarly, I was bummed that the highly recommended Canon 50mm/1.8 has no IS. Any suggestions for a fast prime lens with IS (without breaking the bank)?

FYI - I'd be using this with a crop-sensor type camera like the Canon 60D

Thanks for any suggestions!

Thanks for the input. I like the look of the 10mm on the Canon, and even the 11mm Tokina (sp?) so hopefully the wide angle will hide any movement.

Both good lenses, but the constant f2.8 with the Tokina should be an over all better video lens avoiding flickering if you repo the focal length while shooting.
If you're walking around IS will do little to keep a steady shot. Just try attaching something to the bottom of the camera to add length and mass. A small tripod, monopod or even a short poll with a weight attached to the bottom. This will help keep the camera level to the horizon and slow down choppy motion each time you take a step.
Basic laws of physics working for you.

This is a rig I set up specifically for shooting low angles walking around with the 60D. Works well with the articulating view screen. It can also be configured to shoot high angles by simply reversing the camera mount to the top.
I designed this one with a ball bearing at the top, but I realized I had more control just holding it in the middle of the stem and added a bar to help steer it.
Something like this can be built from anything around the shop or local hardware in about half an hour. If you can't work with aluminum, wood painted black always works as a backup. Not rocket science.

Nice rig! I've seen all sorts of counterbalance & grip setups for these cameras. That'll be my next "research project." However, making one myself is certainly not out of the question. I knew about the constant aperture on the 11mm but the wider 10mm Canon is so alluring since I tend to shoot in narrow confines. But losing one measly mm saves me a bit of $$$ on the Tokina. Just gotta weigh it all out...
