Wide Angle Lens Choice With Merlin ?

Hi Everybody,

Recently i purchased Steadicam Merlin to use with Canon 7D DSLR.
Unfortunately i have Sigma 24-70mm Macro lens. I tried everything to
stabilize it. But unfortunately it is too hard to use it with Merlin,
because it is a long and heavy lens.

So i decided to buy a wide angle lens and i choosed a few.
What do you think about these two lenses.
Which one is a best choice to use with Canon 7D with Merlin.

1 - Canon EF 24mm f/2.8

2 - Sigma 24mm f/1.8 EX DG ASP

Thanks a lot !

those two lenses will give the exact field of view as your current lens (at the widest, 24mm).

i'd suggest looking into:

Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 (~$700 on ebay)
Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 ($720)
Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 (~$650)

personally, i'd take the tokina because it lets more light in. but you also loose a little range.

No, you want a light weight lens, not a zoom for the most part on your Merlin. Something like the tiny Olympus 24mm f2.8. The center of gravity will be closer into the camera body and easier for balancing as well as being less fatiguing for prolonged sessions. You will need at least a limited depth of field of f2.8-f4 because you will not be able to control focus.

A 24mm is approximately the equivalent of a 35mm lens on a full frame sensor. This is the equivalent of a slightly wide normal lens and seems like the sweet spot for a lot of work.

This Olympus is sharp wide open, has good contrast and easily adapted to Canon EOS mounts. It also costs less than $200. If you look outside of EBay you can often find them for as little as $50.

I also recommend for a slightly longer lens if needed, the late model multicoated Carl Zeiss Flektogon 35mmf2.4. It is small, amazingly sharp even wide open, and also has the capacity to do macro work as close in as 20cm for non Merlin circumstances. You can also often find them for less than $200.

You might also look for a Leitz 21mm f/4 Super-Angulon. It'll work just fine with an adapter, is razor sharp with ruler-straight drawing. The focus throw is also super-long, 330deg focus throw down to 0.25m, and the all-important range to 1m is also a lot longer that you'll find in todays auto-focus lenses.

Urr . . . . I should have said that's a S/H Leica / Leitz "R" lens

Finally i bought a clean and very little used OLYMPUS OM ZUIKO 24MM F2.8 Multi Coated lens.
Now i need a Olympus To EOS adapter for my Canon 7D. There are tons of adapters and prices are different. Some of them is AF chipped and others are not.

Help Plz ? Which one should i choose?

Thanks a lot
