wide angle adapter

Can any wide angle adapter with a 72mm thread be used on any camera that has a 72mm mount?
I ask because I'm watching this adapter on ebay and the description says it is 72mm and it's only for canon xl1, xl2. But I have a xh-a1.
Secondly, can I use adapters with different threads with a step-up/down ring? does that compromise framing/optical quality in any way?

I'd highly recommend the wide angle adapter that's meant for the XHA1. It generally will perform better than other adapters. It's like the canon WD-H72 or something like that. Anything with a 72mm thread will work, but I've had really great results with this lens. I'd stay away from stepup/down rings, just because you'll be more likely to get vignetting and distortion with the lens.
