Why Soft Focus? 60d Problem With Lens?

I shot these videos and they come out bad.

I'd like them to look as clear as this one. He's good right.

Instead they look like this. Any ideas.

I used a 50mm lens. Maybe the aperture is too low.

The meter usually is over exposed so I adjust the aperture some and the iso. But I think I was in the 3-4.0 range at most here. I think i need a ND filter.

24p. Neutral setting according to Mr. Bloom

200-400 iso for outside shoot.
inside shoot think was up to 800

hd settings.

Rendered at apple pro res lt
exported at h264

Any advice will be welcomed.

Please don't comment on the subjects. I'm looking for help with my video skills. thanks

How sharp do you want it? The real estate video was acceptable from beginning to end. I guess it could be a bit sharper but if I had seen it without your preface, I never would have thought it was soft.

The shake video has times in which the focus fumbles. The more you stop down, the easier keeping everything in focus will become.

Use an ND filter when you want to open up the iris in a lot of light in order to achieve a narrow depth of field.

Remember that opening up the iris gives you smaller numbers and stopping down results in higher numbers. No offense, just wasn't sure if you'd understand the terms I was using based on your post.

What type of lens are you using? I'm guessing the music video you linked to was shot using some decent modern lenses that can give an ultra crisp look rather than say an M42 50mm 1.8.

A Canon 50 1.8 starts getting really sharp once you're stopped down past f/5.6, I believe. You can also sharpen in post - using the regular sharpen filter in Final Cut works well for me.

Cool Thanks for the comments.

I used a 50mm lens.

Vision_filmz. I choose that video because that kid posted it here in this forum for 60d, 7d, t2i.

I just wanted to know how to make my footage look as clear and not as grainy as mine came out.

Sadly, I graded, color corrected, and added the sharpness filter to mine. I just hate how grainy it looks and wanted some clear footage like that kid did.

So I referenced him cuz it's possibly the same camera as mine.

Thank you all for your time.

If you have any pointers please leave. thanks J

when I started shooting, I also got that "why does my footage look so much softer?" thought; in my case, it was because I was using the recommended settings (sharpness all the way down, contrast all the way down, saturation two notches down), and forgot to add sharpness back in post

if you're finding that when adding sharpness back in post you also get your noise to pop up more, you can run a denoiser before the sharpen; but the proper solution would have been to shoot with more light, so you get less noisy footage in the first place

edit: plus, on youtube and at 720p, you can't expect anything to look sharp

-Should have lit your indoors subject. That way you could shoot at a lower ISO and avoid graininess. If you light it properly you can also create separation between the girl and the background, as it all looks a bit flat.
-Why are you shooting at such a high ISO outdoors? If you need to bring more light onto your subject, use a reflector to bounce some light. I would have also used a different location for the shoot - the background is really boring.

Thank you all.

I do use a cheap lcdlf finder but I'm going to go buy the real one.

Thanks to your suggestions. I played around with the exposures and grading. Getting better. Had to work on sharpening.
