Why so much Nastiness here? Really unnecessary!

I've never used the 'report post' button.
Is it anonymous?
Are guidelines for its use written anywhere?

I think y'all are a bunch of jerks!

But seriously, back in April or possibly March I posted a big "thank you" to everyone here on the site that made it what it is. I was impressed that there wasn't much squabbling and it was a very professional environment. The next day I visited the DSLR area and I felt like a schmuck as I hadn't seen any of the bickering and complaining until I hit that hot spot. I've seen it posted a few times in this thread about how the cheaper prices are bringing in more and more of the "I know everything because I now have an HD camera" attitude. And that really does suck. HOPEFULLY I haven't come across that way to anyone, and if so I'm truly sorry! I, by no means, have the talent / skill to be judgmental (see also: any of my shorts in the User Films section). This is the single best site for filmmaking I've found, and I appreciate everyone that's truly contributing to make it that way.

I've never been an advocate for using the real names option, but if it helps clean up the streets I would cast my vote that way.

it's anonymous to the members at large, but not to mods.

When it doubt, just use it. us mods can make the decision on whether or not to take action on any item reported.

Though, try not to abuse it everytime someone says something that doesn't sit well with you... the "thick skin" does come into play here some as per my previous comments, which is not encouraging the noisy behavior by engaging in it. just ignore and move on... and if it is something you feel is getting out of hand, or that (at the very least) needs to be brought to a mods attention, then please feel free to report it.

When a post is reported, we get a post in the mod section with the reported item, and the reason given for reporting. We also get an email instantly notifying us of a reported item.

Later,
Jason

on egg-shells... that's not what we're trying to say here....

I've seen some great discussions between two highly intelligent people that were on opposite sides in their viewpoint. I've seen them from time to time here, and on reduser, etc, etc... They were passionate, engaged, but they remained respectful to one another.

The point is... not egg-shells, but mutual respect. Disagreeing without being disagreeable. Again, it's not about the opinions, it's about the attitudes. We can't have a utopia where everyone is knowledgeable and gets along, but we can strive for that. And, we are (in the camera discussion sections anyways) demanding that people who wish to post here take the time to frame their post in a way that is respectful to this community, and not some stream of consciousness posting that is heavy on emotion and light on substance. We strive to have the most professional, respectful, and fun atmosphere we can. Obviously, that is a difficult task, but doesn't mean we shouldn't demand it from our membership, and that our membership shouldn't demand it from themselves....

And, don't feed trolls. If someone says something that's a bit knifey, don't engage back... ignore... move on... report if necessary. A lot of noise can be headed off at the pass by just not engaging the noisier members...

Apologies, "Egg Shells" was a bit overboard (more of a reply to Charli's use of the term that I just kept on using as a metaphor).

"Mutual respect" is definitely a better term.

Oh sure, Wilbur, point the finger at me using the "eggshells" why don't you, you.... ha ha hahaha. Oh God, what we call it in the screenwriting forum is to

"RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE"

both parties have their say, no one is right, no one is wrong, just different points of view. Just get the job done is what I say. Make the story coherent and get good audio. Two things that kill your story: 1. Bad story 2. Bad audio. The second is easier to fix than the first.

I'm already using my name, same name in all forums I go to, my byline is Chuck G. Why do people hide under user nicks? I say use a portion of your name or your film company. That should suffice.

I've seen alot of people just say that sucks... If there was more to it then that sucks then i could understand. Or having a statement without backing it up = kindof pointless. i love hearing things i did wrong mind you i also like to do things wrong on purpose. but hey if you can pick it out high five and i'll buy you a beer.

I've seen it posted a few times in this thread about how the cheaper prices are bringing in more and more of the "I know everything because I now have an HD camera" attitude.

That's the biggest change I've seen in the last few years, I've been here since 2005. The price of camera gear has gotten insanely low. Hence, there seems to be more of a younger crowd at play these days. "Affordable pro cameras" have brought to light some talented individuals. But unfortunately, a slew of bottom feeders have come into this realm as well.

At the risk of making a pat statement, I think video & film production has become more of an "everybody's game" and not just some elite club. I'm just thinking back to when I started getting into video production (the 90's) Desktop editing systems? Laptop editing systems? Affordable pro cameras? It wasn't a reality to have these items in your hot little hands. You wanted to shoot and edit something at a semi-pro level? You had to work somewhere or know someone that had gear. And that s**t was expensive, not 32 hundred bucks! Nowadays "everybody's doing it", especially when you factor in the bumper crop of people stealing software. And believe me, the short time that I taught an editing class, you should have heard how proud some of the students were to tell me how they got this program or that for free off the internet.

I wouldn't go so far as to say the general attitude of new HD camera users on this site is "I know everything", but yeah, I've seen some douchey comments here and there. I think the general attitude on the 'net has reached new lows in recent years, due to the lack of accountability. Youtube is like a bloodbath with the comments! Is this really a reflection of our nation's (and the world's) youth? Makes the worst threads on this site look like The Church Mission Society!

One more thought from page one:
Funny, in the DVXuser Film Festivals the feedback is usually quite positive. Its extremely rare that someone rips apart someone else's work in a Fest. Extremely rare.
That's probably because watching those films would require a bit of time and effort to load up and/or download. Not enough pixel peeping factor!

Ha... I'm too Chicken to use my real name! Even using this pseudofail does not protect my "inner emo" - You missed a great personal attack on me in this thread (mods deleted it) - Dang stuff still cuts me deep even though I know it shouldn't.

I guess some people are just tougher than others! ;)

'Never really thought about the responsibility taken by using a real name. NVentive is a production group, I'm the guy appointed to track the forums and distill the news. I can see where real names is a good idea, 'guess I need to navigate over to the sig section and fill that out.....

It was a simpler time when I gladly held the post of Sheriff. : )

I agree with the O.P. but also like open criticism. I never fall into fluffing a posters work for the sake of being nice. Ironically, if I scathe someone, it's possible I saw something good in it and want even better. Real, true **** that is posted I can barely make a comment at all on it.

But yeah, respect is key but there are some people that think their work is amazing stuff and don't want too hear any negativity at all.

I don't fall into the gear centric crowd ever. Back when it was DVX100 vs Canon XL1 I was rabid over my DVX but these days there really isn't any clear bad choice; all the cameras out there are more than enough in my opinion (The camera wars are over).

I have always wanted to see more artists and visual genius than the camera image anyways.

I'm babbling.

You are touching on something that has been brewing in the back of my mind. That a zero point or bottom line will be reached.
And that line is when an awesome image is affordable to everybody. What then? What happens when everybody can afford the equipment that
makes an awesome image? Well then it boils down to your reel and your body of work.
I look forward to this (mythical) time as I hope there will be a lot more creativity and less fighting. Maybe sometime soon.

Yes

It's like in Hollywood for so many years; everyone is making films with an Arri or Panavision but who really are the masters ?

You are far from babbling. I completely agree.

The cameras these days (all of them) are amazing. What I care deeply about are the stories being told with them.
