Why so much Nastiness here? Really unnecessary!

I think we're going to piss some people off and drop the hammer for a while... until folks get the idea or no one is left.

I'm tired of it myself, and I'm also tired of trying to reason with people. If you act like a punk on here, we're just going to start banning and moving on. It's not about opinions, it's about attitudes...

Don't want to be an asshole or make things tense here, but I think the good majority of us can agree that immaturity and lack of respectful discussion is creating too much noise... So, until we can get a more proper post rating system in place, we'll just do it the old fashioned way :)

Sorry in advance to anyone I piss off, and who decides to stalk me or send me dirty messages... and sorry in advance if I don't bother responding to them :)

something like that... so, the noise will still be there, but the goal (whatever we end up implementing) will be that someone can easily bypass most of the noise and just read the meat of threads. Alternatively, a pos/neg system could come into play, where posts that get voted down (by respected members) x amount of times automatically become invisible, and are only viewed on clickable action by the reader.

REMEMBER, it's not the viewpoints that we want to discourage. It's the attitude, immaturity, disrespect, and EMOTION that goes along with many of them.
Sounds amazing.

I've been apart of forums before, and I really appreciate it when moderators do just that. Moderate the kids that come in with attitude. Warn once, and then ban away. ESPECIALLY if they show disrespect and are low post count/not contributing members. Too inclusive is bad. Keep the crap away.

I was embarrassed for this place because of the P Bloom thread, and really it came down to a few low post count trolls that jumped in and started bitching about picture quality etc. with no respect. We need to chip together some kind of thanks and apology to P Bloom so that he doesnt think so badly of this forum.

Me, I began learning video here, and I want to continue learning and educating on a great forum. Thanks all!

Using the report function for offensive, rude, and insulting posts would be a big help. Sometimes people have an itchy trigger finger on that, but on the whole, it really helps us be aware of what's going on.

Heads that need to be busted will be busted. We've done it before; we'll do it again; people who don't want to be respectful aren't welcome here and won't be missed when they're gone. So, let us know.
I shoulda jump on that early on in the day. My bad. Will do!

...we're just going to start banning and moving on...

i'd say this website is sort of like telling stories around a campfire. there are a whole lot of people that know how to build the fire and they go back and forth about the best way to do it. there aren't as many people that can tell a good story once the campfire is made.

...and nobody minds if you toss a burned-up weenie in the fire.

I feel like there are a lot of questions lately being asked in threads that could easily be answered in a 2 second google search.
Driving me bonkers.

You have a roomful of testosterone over a few hundred at a time and you think someone isn't going to step on someone's toes? When I first joined, when I was a teenager (cough, cough) there were far more squabbles then than now.

I do think in the Festivals section it becomes too much of a "love fest" and not enough of solid critique of what's really going right/wrong with the film. Screenwriting forums we tear each others pages apart, but in a constructive way. I don't see enough constructive critique in the Fest section which leaves me to wonder if people don't want to step on toes because of the voting process.

I just had an individual post deleted because I questioned why it's call the "Fiction fest" and I think the mods took it the wrong way. It's really no skin off my nose. You have to allow mods to pick and choose what they feel might be a can of worms and delete your post and don't whine about it. Also if someone steps on your toes, you can ALWAYS take it 1-1 and settle things, seriously.

This is a community, spit is going to happen, but how you rise above it will speak volumes of you.

It is the anonymity of the internet that causes armchair Kubkricks to say things on a forum that they wouldn't dare say to someone's face.

It's funny because, I was just thinking about the quality of posts these days. Technical discussions almost always (at present) lead to people espousing their beliefs as truth...
There are some very simple words that everyone here should operate under:
Constructive
Respectful
Open mindedness

I love this place and I'm glad the mods are going toclean house when necessary. Thumbs up!

Jason summed it up -- it's not the opinions, it's the attitudes. If you have a challenging punk-ass attitude, you're going to have to content yourself with telling your friends how awesome you are and how horrible this place is, because you aren't going to be around here anymore.

Nobody minds disagreements and intellectual discussion and reasoned arguments. But we used to have a rule around this place that this is our living room, and if you don't behave yourself well, you'll be asked to leave. Or thrown out, depending on which mod gets there first.

Respect is the key. If you don't want to respect others here, please -- leave now. Save us all the trouble, time, and angst. Seriously people here have no idea who they're talking to, the new poster you smack-talk may very well be the president of Sony's animation division, or Peter Jackson's personal right-hand-man editor, or a two-time Oscar-nominated director, because all those people are members of DVXUser. Or, well, at least they were.

Loving this thread.

I have been a member of DVXuser for 3 months now, joining just 3 months after buying my 7D. 90% of what I have learned about video and DSLRs I have learned from these forums. I owe a lot to its active members who have taken the time to answer my questions. Specifically, PerroneFord has helped me more than anyone when I was getting up to speed with the 7D. A huge "Thank You," Perrone.

The negative posts, which seem to be cropping up at a growing rate in the DSLR forums, are getting tiresome. I have no problems with people asking questions that could probably be answered by a quick forum search - I was in the same position as they, most likely, and someone may learn from or contribute to the thread, so it's still win-win in my book. But the regression in intellectual communication - technical, artistic, ethical, etc. - is, simply put, disgusting. I feel lucky having stumbled onto such a well-run and inspiring website that is, in a way, an extension of my education and the filmmaking society around me, so I almost take it personally when I see altercations erupt over the tiniest of things.

Take this, then, as a plea to the moderators. A Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down system like YouTube's would be fantastic, but please take the gloves off when you feel its necessary. This is such a great website - bravo for taking it this far. No one will lose a second of sleep if XXDevilCameraXX gets banned or if 7DSuperHuman's post gets deleted. If they don't like it, they can make their own website.

... It seems like insecurity to me. Alot of people who think of themselves as a filmmakers since they own a DSLR now feel the obligation to defend their cameras/work they do on those cameras against more professional/spendy equipment.

edit:
just in case my earlier (and deleted) post was misinterpreted, this is what I meant by Cartman

Hi Charli.

I understand the spirit of your comment is that we should basically grow thicker skin and I disagree wholeheartedly.

I fired a very 'respected' production manager halfway through a very challenging 40 day shoot because she was ranting at some of the cast and crew. Her response to me was that this is the film industry and we should grow a thicker skin.. She also told me that I am yet young and have a lot to learn about the 'real world'.

Well, those who want to live in the 'real world' are welcome to it, but in my world you have the ability to teach people how to treat you! I refuse to be humiliated by anyone and I sure as hell will not allow anyone to be humiliated when I am in the vicinity!

What you call a 'love fest' should be the norm! Constructive criticism builds not only the work of the Artist but also the confidence of the Artist to try again.
People already have to fight through so many insecurities to pursue something as unstable as a career in movie making - the last thing in the world they need is more discouragement.

There are millions of ways to tell someone how their work can improve without humiliating them.

those people are members of DVXUser. Or, well, at least they were.

I think this critical. The signal to noise ratio has changed and I think a season of mod smack down would do the site some good. We might loose members but the real value of DVXuser has never been in the quantity of people here but the quality, knowledge and experience the users bring. DVXuser has impacted my career and business more than any other single resource. I have learned so much from the countless amounts of people on here that are much smarter and experienced than me. If this place gets too noisy all the incredible talent will loose interest and the value of the site will change.

I know its a challenge. You use to have to shell out 3K for an entry level cam now a trip to Sam's Club and 800 bucks later you have a very workable and cinematic camera. So the cost of entry is lower and anyone can come on in. That should be great for the site, but when this sea of new people show up and start personally insulting seasoned pros for sharing their work and experience it is a serious problem.

Below some thoughts from Philip from the Af100 forum which I think are very important.

Show a little respect please. You have no clue about my work just picking one fun solitary example that got played a lot as it was one of first 7d pieces.

It's tiresome and on behalf of DVXuser and filmmakers everywhere it represents everything that is wrong here. Henry Olanga's comments were bang out of order especially when I have answered his questions helpfully many times.

Please let us return DVXuser to the filmmakers and the aspiring filmmakers and the rest of you learn some manners and civility. I come here an it depresses the hell out of me and you wonder why I hardly come here anymore?

I have made a great many friends on here and I respect every single person's right to express an opinion on things but it's becoming more and more the like the talkbacks on AICN and YouTube than a place to inspire and advise people.

Just because you are sitting behind a laptop should not change the way you speak to people. If anything it should be even more respectful as you do not know them.

Is this commentary on the state of things here going to affect anything? No. But I just want a few of you to just reflect on you behaviour.

I have no intention of repeatedly defending my work as it futile but clearly the majority no nothing of what I do and clearly don't care either!

"My two cents"

There are a lot of gift horses on this forum... lets not end up with a pack of asses instead!

If it appears to anyone that I am laboring my point, you are correct. DVXuser is by far the most useful tool I have found for getting questions answered and i think it should be protected at all costs!

There's a whole generation of film makers who will join this forum at some point and they should learn that film making is much more than technical knowledge!

I hereby climb off my soapbox.

and for the newer members...the amount of posts someone has holds little water. take me for example. i've been here for a couple of years and have racked up close to 2,000 posts. most of which are responses like "yeah", and "totally". just saying.

and in that time, i've learned a lot, yet i constantly feel like i know nothing, and that's sad. i havent posted footage here in over a year. again, sad. hopefully things will turn around. i can only do what i can do.

I'm really glad someone else decided to bring this issue up, because after reading the thread in the AF100 forums I felt terrible enough to want to open a thread just like it. Reading that thread marked the first time in my history at DVXuser that I was ashamed to be part of this community. As a young filmmaker, many people I collaborated with recommended DVXuser as a great resource to learn and share work with a community of filmmakers in an open, inviting, resourceful, respectful manner. It's part of what makes DVXuser unique. I haven't been here long by any means, especially in comparison with some members, but I have always tried to be helpful, express my opinions on subject matter clearly and respectfully, and always take into consideration the fact that other people have different circumstances and perspectives that may shape their opinion. Is it wrong to expect newer members to do the same thing?

The professionalism on this forum has dropped off quite rapidly. Bloom even pointed it out as the reason he frequents this forum less and less, and that's such a tragedy because not only is he an amazing filmmaker, but until recently he used to be available as a resource to a number of filmmakers and aspiring filmmakers alike. And frankly it sucks to have someone like him driven away from our community because people are incapable of being respectful. Nevermind that the camera he shot with isn't even finished. Nevermind that he has continually and consistently provided a great resource of knowledge and know-how through his website and these forums. Nevermind that he had one day to shoot in a crowded van with six other shooters.

I don't want to have to feel embarrassed by other DVXuser members posts.
