Why Should I Not get a 7D

I would second selling the HV30 and getting the 7D. Or get a 35mm adapter.

The thing with HDSLR's is, excluding the obvious improvement in low light performance with a decent lens, is the ability to trully develop your cinematography skills and produce results that can rival in many aspects to much more expensive productions. A bare bones, no 35mm HV30 will NEVER look as beautiful as a 7D shot in bokeh, dinamic range and DOF. You can zoom as much as you want with an HV30 to get a blury DOF background, but in the process you lose F stops, the bokeh will not be the same, as well as many other issues. The 7D opens up the door for you to learn cinematography close to what the Industry pros do. That's also one thing to consider.

I played a Small roll of a Police Officer in the Film Battle Los Angeles, Due out feb 2011 and there were plenty of Sony Ex1 and EX3 on set shooting. I dint see any dslr but Now that I own one it would have done the SAME IF NOT BETTER than those cameras during the main battle sequence. The Rest was ofCourse FILM Panavision
Exactly. That's what I'm talking about. I'm sure these type of things go on all the time. It's just some folks can't understand this.

It's funny because if some of these...um..."detractors"...were told that a well known DP like Rodney Charters was outfitting a Panavision lens to a 7D and doing some actual work (without seeing any of these articles or Vimeo files) I assume they would just as quickly dismiss the idea (and I wouldn't blame them). And if Phil Bloom was not so well known around these here parts and didn't have his blog...but the news surfaced that there was this DP who filmed some material for George Lucas etc. on a 5Dll/7D that surprised a notable audience during screening etc.,...that would still be dismissed. Yet...these things did happen...there's proof of it etc., but somehow we still can't get beyond the idea that a major production wants to use any of these DSLRs in some capacity on their set? I say get over it...stranger things have happened.

I have access to a cockpit soon and will be having my friend (copilot for delta) take my 7D with a 11mm, 14mm, and 24mm on the plane with him. He is going to capture some amazing sunset, sunrise, and MOONRISE footage/stills for me. I will post the results (1-2 weeks)

I am curious, has any of his video with the 7D been targetted for a medium not on the internet? Broadcast, film projection, etc. And if so, were the edited shots from the 7D longer than 0-2 seconds intercut in footage from higher end cameras?

I've often wondered about the total in seconds of Red One footage in shots of 3.58 seconds to a maximum of 8.74 seconds duration broadcast on 3 of the 4 major networks in 2008.

Seriously though, I think by the way the OP worded the question, his mind is made up...get your 7D already...

Good question. You could ask the colorist (the guy who posted the videos on Vimeo) these questions. But I think we all at least know the answer to one...and that is film projection. But I'm not sure if any of his work was just in house, for distribution or whatever.

I have an hvx with letus adapter and a 7d. The major difference for me is, i can haul my 7d around my neck, as where with my hvx and letus i can barely hold the thing for more than ten minutes. I carry my 7d everywhere i go so i am able to shoot things i would've normally missed. the more i have my 7d and the more familiar i get with it the less i am pulling my hvx out.

sure it doesn't have some of the features we all wished for, but its simply amazing for the price.

it's the best money i have spent in a long time.
