Why RED is already a success - DVGuru post

Hey all,

Just posted an opinion piece at DVguru about how RED is already having a positive effect on the camcorder market. Give it a read and chime in with your thoughts!

"RED's greatest promise is that it will irreversibly change the landscape of filmmaking technology. But what if it ends up being a huge piece of vaporware? Or what if it's not even a camera, and it turns out to be founder Jim Jannard's top-secret project to build the ultimate rocket launcher? Here's how RED has already succeeded in blowing up the video camera market--no rockets required."

Thanks,
Ryan

Good article, but I don't disagree about the new Sony camera and them packing all of that into a $5000 camera.

It has 1/4" sensors. Why not give us 1/3" CMOS?

I think the reason is because the 1/4" are going to end up performing like the 1/3" but not as good as 1/2". So basically, they just added the 24p and upped the price $1000 (compated to their hdv model).

The new camera still uses tape?? How is that a step up?

Doesn't sound like they are going out of their way to pack stuff in because the Red Camera is coming out.

Now if they had release a 1/2" CMOS camera with 24p and records to a compact flash drive and has external SATA ports to record to an external drive, then I would think to myself: they really packed a lot of stuff into there for that $5000 pricetag.
