I think optical is great for backup. It's cheap and theoretically lasts quite a while (I do my best not to scratch these things and there are ways to repair them afte scratches).
For out of camera however, I think I'd want something a lot less fragile. Swapping DVDs or Blue Rays while in the middle of a hectic shoot just seems a recipe for disaster. Not to mention that the bandwith limit is going to be a real pain.
