Why isn't Onlocation capturing HDV?

I don't know how long I've been reading posts but this time I'm not finding my answer in the search, so I've resorted to my first post ever!

So I upgraded to a macbook pro so I could record HDV to HDD, and the HVX is set up for 1080 60i, I'm not in native mode, not in 1394 host mode. When I tell Onlocation to record, it shoots DV, (whichever format I set for DV recording), and not mpeg. What is this newb doing wrong?

Thanks for any help.

It records exactly what the camera outputs -- the HVX is not a HDV camera, it uses DVCProHD in 1080. That means you'll get an AVI file instead of an MPG file.

of course, that makes sense now. so in this case i should be recording in .mov or purchase a codec to handle .avi? (i'm editing with Premiere Pro on a Mac)

OnLocation can record the HVX's data stream directly. You don't need anything else. Set OnLocation to record a Quicktime .MOV file, and you should be able to use it to record DVCPRO-HD files directly.

Thanks everyone, after reading all of the literature I had just confused myself on the HDV/DVCPro issue, now I'm clear.

I don't necessarily need the .avi files I've recorded, but is there a codec I can purchase that will read them or will QTPro export them as .mov?

so i did a trial run, Premiere won't import the QT files, they are 1080i60 as is the project settings, what am I doing wrong? I've been struggling all day....
