Why is this video so blurry?

I downloaded both the 1080p clip and the 480p clip from YouTube. My old eyes discern very little difference. However, I put the 1080p clip on a Vegas timeline and add +20 contrast. Here are the results. The first is raw, the second is with the +20 contrast.

I'm half tempted to apply +40 contrast to the entire 1080p video, render it out at 1080p, and upload it to YouTube for comparison -- but the owner of the video might not be pleased.

The Vimeo upload is a low res SD video, so you really can't compare it to a YouTube HD version.

If this was scaled down from a HD copy, then they did a crappy job of down-rezzing to SD format.

But if you go to the YouTube version, they have both 1080p and 480p versions -- supposedly. Again, I couldn't tell much difference between the two personally. But adding contrast does make a big difference, I think.

You think so? Yea it helped but still looks terrible. hah It's nothing to worry about. The owner of the company called me to complain about the horrible job their last videographer did. I just wanted to figure out what went so horribly wrong with the video.

Well all you can do is tell him that without access to the raw footage from the camera, you really can't tell what might have gone wrong -- then show him samples of your superior work. Let him know the quality you can provide. Go from there.

That's interesting. It does seem like the video might have been recorded in some type of log.

I don't think it's any type of log, but it could be a "flat" image profile. Log footage would still look really un-natural if you just simply added some contrast. You need to actually play with curves and LUT's to get log footage back to something natural.

Either way it has been poorly handled in post.
