why is there no good quality?

everytime i capture the my 24p footage from my dvx100b, the footage comes out jittery looks like its shaking with lines, i dont get any clearness and quality like i hoped i would from this camera, i tried uploading many diff times, on vegas and premiere, i had it on lower fields first and no field progressive scan, 24fps, 29.97fps etc, still the same, any one know what i can do so i can achieve capturing footage with its natural quality and not loose any when capturing. or what settings for vegas to use. hehe, anything on how to get HIGH QUALITY haha. you guys know what i mean right?
thank you guys.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you need to examine the way you SHOOT the footage. Are you locking it on a tripod? Are your pan/tilt rates slow enough to AVOID the "jitter" or are you going too fast? Read Barry Green's book about 24p and pan rates-- he says it better than most.

Make sure you have enough lighting, try not to use the 'gain switch' and set your shutter speed at a decent number.

And also check whether you're shooting 24pA or 24p. 24pA will come out jittery unless your NLE removes the pulldown.

It's not really an issue in Vegas or Premiere Pro 2.0. If it's on a 24p timeline, the pulldown is always removed, whichever pulldown type it is. Don't know if PP 2.0 is the version he's using, though.

Most likely, this is because of the way the footage was shot, as people have said above.

ok

ok

i will upload some footage uncompressed and show you guys want i mean, i have shot it in 24p with a lot of light hehe, can it be from scene settings?? but i will show you what i mean. also, its not that kind of jitteriness from the pan, tiliting. It happens even when its static, and also when i shoot, the background always gets blurry and unblurry. Ugh nvm hehe, ill just upload, im having a hard time explaining. :)

P.S. How do you guys capture your footage,( program, settings and all). thank you

When your camera is set on a tripod, and not moved...the background always gets blurry and unblurry? That doesn't make too much sense to me, hm.

If your moving the camera around, anthe background gets blurry and unblurry, then you might have AUTO FOCUS on.

I capture my footage with vegas, with 24fps.

Odd...I saw interlaced lines. My computer is reporting that the frame rate is 30 fps, which would be expected since the pulldown is not yet removed, and might account for the jittery motion if you shot at 24pA and just want to playback the raw footage. One odd thing though are those flickers in the background; those might be due to the shakiness of the footage since they decreased considerably when you hold the camera still.

I don't see the focus changing though.

Footage looked fine to me. Saw some interlacing, but that will not show up on TV. I am guessing you shot on scene file F6, 24pA, since it looked like the V. Freq was set to thin, which caused a bit of flickering in fine details when playing back in Windows Media Player. Nothing inherently wrong with that.

Burn a DVD and see what it looks like on your TV. Probably you won't see any of the things you perceive to be problems when viewing on your compuetr.

so you see how the footage is, to me its no clear at all, and the interlacing is really bad,and its blurry. the camera is on 24p, not 24pa, i have no idea why its like this, even the coloring is bad. What can i do to fix this, scene settings? or waht??

Hey Magid,

There's nothing technically "wrong" with your footage. But it's really hard to watch, that's true. I remember having kind of a similar experience when I first held a DVX100—I waved it around and looked at the viewfinder wondering "why doesn't this look like a movie?" Step one, as others have suggested, is to get yourself a tripod. A big part of the issue with the footage you posted is that it never settles long enough for the viewer's eye to register anything.

Having said that, there are a few technical reasons for the issues you cite:
  • The footage is 24pA. Only a good thing if you work with it in an NLE that strips out the redundant frames and works with it at 23.976fps. Otherwise, it will look jittery on playback and can exhibit interlacing when viewed on a computer.
  • It looks like you have auto everything turned on. First clue is the shutter. You have a very fast shutter speed, hence almost no motion blur at all. This is combining with the handheld camera motion to create a very jittery image.
  • Detail. Looks like you have it cranked up, which is the default. You need to turn it way down to kill the video-like "ringing" around all your high-contrast edges.
  • Auto focus. Almost never a good idea. Remember, it catches up with you slower in 24p modes than in 60i.
  • Blown-out areas. You have a blown-out sky and headlights. Video never looks good with blown-out areas, but worse still the high detail (sharpening) is exacerbating the crunchy edges caused by the blown-out pixels.
Lastly, I thought it would be fun to point out that good color correction can sometimes rescue a shot. Check out this screen capture of me applying three Colorista presets to your footage. Of course, you could do the same with Rebel CC or other color correction tools too.

Hope that helps!

OMG THAT WAS awesome what you did, in ae. I dont have Magic Bullets :( . Another weird thing is that in vegas, the project display looks so Clear and Good, it says on it 24.00i display, now when i save it or render it, doesnt come close to the display. what should i save it as. Also it is not 24pa. IM 100% sure. What should i have the scene settings saved as?? THanks Lots ProLots.

Heh, you're right, it's not 24pA, it's 24p—you can even see that at the beginning of my screen cap movie.

I'm no Vegas expert, so hopefully someone else can help you with the right render settings.

If you're seeing 24.000, then you probably aren't in the right project properties.

Choose one of the 24p templates for your Project Settings -- widescreen or standard, depending on your footage -- and then don't change anything. Whether it's 24p standard, or 24p advanced, Vegas will be able to remove the pulldown on the timeline. Then, all of your problems should go away.

BUT, rendering is an issue, too. How exactly did you render that file? Give me all of the details -- I know it's an AVI, but tell me what all of the settings were.

NTSC DV, Video Renderin: Best, Video Frame Rate 23.967 Inserting 2:3, NTSC DV ,Interleave every (seconds) 0.250 , create an openDML, audio uncompressed. So you see when its in the timeline it looks good, when rendered, horrible. What should the project settings be?

Like I say, I'm not a Vegas expert, but the important question is, what is your output destination? You're inserting 3:2 pulldown, which is only something you want if you're outputing to an interlaced playback medium, like tape or a DVD. If you want to play it back on a computer, you just want 23.976 fps, no pulldown.
