why is it so slow???

Hi, I have a pc with an Intel quad core 2.4 GHz processor, 4 gb of ram, nvidia geforce 9600 GT graphic card, and I'm getting really high rendering times. With CC, a 10 second clip takes 2 minutes to render, is this right? should it be this slow? And when I play the avi raylight files in blue it is really sloppy... I thought I would be ok with this computer... any comments?

Depends on the software and filters you are using, not every software has the same rendering demands/time.
Does your software support multi-core processing? If it doesn't, then you're rendering on only one core (open the task manager while rendering, you see four diagrams and if only one is at 100% and the others are near to 0 then your nle doesn't support multiple cores - or maybe all cores are used but the overall usage is like 25-30%, which shows that maybe your nle is able to use all cores, but the plug-in just isn't)

What format are you rendering? SD, HD? There's a significant difference between SD and HD rendering.

I have the same processor, 2GB of RAM (I'm using WinXP 32bit, so 4GB would be pointless) and an ATI Radeon X1950Pro. I'm using Premiere CS3 (which supports multi-core cpus).
I haven't been working with HD material on this system yet, SD rendering is pretty good. With SD I can preview in realtime and full quality a clip with Magic Bullet Looks 1.5, at only 54% CPU. However when I render the clip it takes real time or even a little more to render that clip. Remind you that is SD, not HD!

However, when I first installed CS3 on that computer and tested some stuff I was also a little disappointed from the rendering times. I suspect Premiere CS3 is much more demanding than previous versions, because the developers knew they'd be able to code for >2GHz multi-core processors. This is also the case with other software: you buy a new computer which is much faster, but then the new programs are more demanding as well and you end up with the same render times. Just look at computer games: buy the best computer you can get now, wait two months and there's a least one new game that is, in best quality settings, just too much for your supercomputer.

Thanks FBAS for your answer. I'm in Vegas 8.0 rendering 720p files and compressing to wmv or mpeg-2. Why do you say 4GB of RAM is pointless for xp 32 bit?
