I posted a couple times about the c100, the noise floor, and detail in the darks. It is the biggest weakness and I have been trying to find my way around it. This is yet another effort to see what others are doing. Here's my problem, cannon explains that you should shoot at 32% IRE for middle grey in canon log to get the most "highlight retention." In that scenario you get 5.2 stops in the highlights if you count up to 109% IRE, but what about under middle grey. I've done some testing and the noise floor is difficult to define. Looking at 32 IRE middle canonlog the noise floor is maybe at 3-4 stops down, which is nice placing this camera close to higher end cameras, BUT the noise floor shifts when you normalize the footage and bring middle grey back to 50 IRE from 32 IRE. I'm getting noisy low detail darks only 2 stops under middle grey once normalized. Why would canon recommend an exposure range of 5+ and 2-, maybe this is not a concern on the c300 but I don't have one to test. The big gamma shift you have to give to the footage to restore middle grey is to large even for Prores hq 422 in my opinion. I'm done with 32 IRE. Many have labeled red as falsifiers of dynamic range but the c100 is guilty of this as well. Its my opinion that this camera has a 8 stop usable exposure range though it has 12 stops of dynamic range. The only solution where I have been able to get balanced detail in the darks and highlights in canon log has been overexposing by two stops. Its around 48% IRE so the gamma remapping is minimal and the image is really clean and you have about a 4 stop range underneath middle grey which is not bad, the bad side is that you loose 2 stops in the highlight making your exposure range 3+,4- which isn't that great. All my testing was at 850 ISO. I would love to be wrong about this, help me out!
