Why is 300 shooting in 1280x1080 instead of 1920x1080?

A client who edits informed me that the P2 files I sent him on a drive are 1280x1080. I checked and sure enough that's what they read under Item Properties/Format.

I have always thought that our 300s shoot full raster 1920x1080. So why does it say this? I was in 1080/60 DVCPRO 60i.

They shoot full-raster in AVC-Intra.

But DVCPRO HD 1080 has always been 1280x1080 with 1.3333 pixel aspect. It's the codec.

DVC pro is only 1280x 720. Switch over to AVC I and you get the 1920x1080 capability you are looking for.

Yup. Taken from wiki:

DVCPRO HD uses smaller raster size than broadcast high definition television: 960x720 pixels for 720p, 1280x1080 for 1080/59.94i and 1440x1080 for 1080/50i. Similar horizontal downsampling is used in many other HD formats. To maintain compatibility with HDSDI, DVCPRO100 equipment upsamples video during playback.

So there you go, if you shoot in DVCPRO HD, then you get a smaller raster. The only reason for shooting this format nowadays is for greater NLE/hardware compatibility as you don't need the latest and greatest to drive this codec, that and you can stream DVCPRO via firewire.

Well, no, in 1080 it's 1280x1080 with 1.3333 PAR; in 720 it's 960x720 with 1.3333 PAR.

Yeah, I would pick AVC-I 100 over DVCPRO HD any time except for those circumstances. (AVC-I 50, not so much.)
