Why I love the Kata HB 207 camera bag

i have the 205 (207 little bro) for my dvx and other stuff and really luv the support. that shell thing on the outside and the padding inside is really good.
Question: do they have some kinda thermal technology that keeps the interior temp cool? cuz even on really hot days when i open my 205 bag the temp in there is cool...and camera cool to touch. pretty nice :)

No but they have the silver slip cover that your supposed to put over it to keep the sun off in the desert or in the sun all day to keep it cool. It comes with it.

Wow, those are nifty setups. My gear's usually fragmented across a bunch of bags - I should look into something more along those lines. How heavy is a bag like that, full?

Thank you for these advises,
I was looking a good bag for my new panasonic 151,
Can you even advise a good shop online?
Thanks
Gilles

Like I said B+H has these at a pretty good price and they are a reputable dealer.

For those if that have the camera standing upright instead of on it's side, does it dig into your back at all when wearing the back pack snugly? (is snugly even a word?)

I got mine from b&h... With their edu discount it was under $200 shipped! The price did get lower, I never considered it before the drop.

Here is the specifications on that from Kata:

Material
Exterior:
TST (Thermo-Shield-Technology) is thermo-formed nylon in a protective "ribshape" construction. It is a double cord, water and dust proof, high tenacity and abrasion-resistance fabric.
Interior: Cross-linked, closed cell PE+EVA shield that provides insulation from cold, heat and moisture as well protection from impact and shock.

Right now the 207 is $204 at B&H, I paid $279 for it when it came out. That's a sweet deal.

Yeah, I probably would have picked one up at that price. I ended up getting an almost new Burton off some locally for a hundred bucks but it's a tighter fit than the Kata.

Does the camera section open from the back or from the front (the side that hugs your back)?

it opens from the side thats not against your back. i owned the 207 but thought it was just too cumbersome to wear and didnt care for the big turtle shell look. it was indeed built extremely well and a very nice pack just didnt fit my needs. it was ok to carry from the car to a location or something but I just couldnt wear it walking around all day. I have since been using the cinbags backpack which holds about as much as the 207 but is more compact. I wish there was a solution for a very small pack that could just hold the camera and a battery or 2.

Here's my "poor man's" travel case. I started with a Mountain Equipment Co-op Shuttle 2 Travelpack here. The bag cost $62 CDN and has hidden backpack straps and a removable carrying strap

Then I used corrugated plastic (Coroplast), some 1/2" thick foam (Ensolite camping foam) and lots of gaffers tape.

The centre box is taller than the sides to protect the camera. I've used this as a carry-on on a couple of international flights and it's held up well. Total cost was under $80. I like the fact that it doesn't look like a camera bag.

Here's a few photos: Link to dot mac

I agree that it is a large bag...

But I love that all the essentials can go in one pack and be ready to go. I have camera, lights, batts, wireless lavs, shotguns, hand helds and still have pockets open. Also fits my beast 17' mbp (or a slate).

jchristie, that looks like it is effective, nice.

Im thinking of getting this bag today but wanted to see if anyone else has had problems bringing it on a plane. I'd definitely want to make sure I can always use it as a carry on

cool, thanks for pushing this old thread back. i didnt realize this post until now. this bag looks like a good fit for what i want.
