Why I love the Kata HB 207 camera bag

I recently had to do a shoot that took me to five different countries across three continents. It was a one man band operation with me needing to be able to carry all of my equipment and clothing for a month from place to place. I used the Kata HB 207 to carry my equipment and i thought it may be useful for people to hear my experiences.

To begin with, in the bag I was carrying my camera, a digital SLR, a 17" Macbook Pro, headphones, a couple of small microphones for interview, chargers for all equipment and a boom mic with all the wiring.

So I'd say quite a lot of equipment and my first major concern before going away was transporting it all in hand luggage. I was checking in my Tripod (though making sure to check it in as fragile) and obviously my clothes. The Kata HB 207's actual dimensions are a shade over the requirements on almost all airlines which I find slightly strange. These dimensions are also when the bag isn't filled. Once packed with all my belongings it was both way over their weight restrictions and definitely over their size restrictions.

Despite this I was able to travel with my luggage on board with absolutely no problems on all the airlines except Easyjet. My gut feeling is that the budget airlines are far more likely to cause you a problem and so in future I will do my utmost to avoid travelling on these airlines.

What was also interesting is that it was only on the budget airlines that I had a problem actually fitting the bag into the overhead locker. There was an anxious moment as i stood on my flight from Berlin to Barcelona where i was really struggling to squeeze it into the space. Fortunately, I managed to get it in with a bit of a struggle.

Overall the bag kept my equipment safe. Most worrying for me was my laptop. I felt that it was sure to be damaged with the amount of movement. But it was absolutely fine and I had no cause for concern.

I would highly recommend this bag for any work that requires travel. The customisable space inside allows you to fit a huge amount of equipment and the little nooks and crannys all around the bag allow you to stuff things that you need to grab quickly.

As I was a bit nervous before i went away I thought this little review may be of use to people in a similar scenario and for those who are considering picking out a case to travel with.

As an extra bonus I had a little trolley cart that my family use to move things around the farm. This worked as a means of trolleying my kit around perfectly and i highly recommend it if carrying a large amount of weight.

Cheers
Ryan

I guess I found my new backpack.
Which tripod did you bring with you ?
A small photo tripod or those bigger bogen/sachtler tripod ....

had the 207 for my DVX but sold it for the cinebags backpack once i got the 150. The kata was made really well but for my purposes the cinebags fits the 150 much better as its much deeper that the 207 and feels more comfortable to wear. i couldnt get the 150 to fit well without taking the lens hood off and placing it on its side which IMO took up to much room in the pack. plus you dont look like a big turtle wearing it with the cinebags. it looks more like a hikers pack and not a turtle shell :) ryandeean i'd like to see a pic of your bag setup. just curious to how you place your camera in it.

Heres my HB207 set up. I love it. I never had any trouble with the lens hood, etc. It slides in nicely with room to spare, along with my HV30 and accessories. It is also very comfortable and seems to offer very good protection for a "soft" pack. It is however, a large turtle like pack as was mentioned. Most of the other bags that I looked at will not hold everything that I need. I do like the way the Cinebags look.

cool. i was thinking people would have to have the camera on its side. when i tried that i felst it was taking up too much space in the bag but it looks like you still got a good deal of stuff crammed in there. :)

I am also a big fan of the 207. You can get a ton of crap in there... though it is a tad large when all you need is the cam. I have no problem storing the 150 in there bottom-down, which gives you extra space.

I have one for my hvx200 and love it, it is packed to the hilt with gear. Kata makes tactical gear for the Israeli military so it's very well designed and built. 2 years of tornado chasing with it in extreme conditions and it is like new. I really like the kata stuff.

I have one as well, and I love it so much more than using a pelican case. Like a previous poster said, it is pretty excessive if you are just carrying a camera with it. But if you're like me and want to be an entire film crew, this is the perfect bag. You can essentially carry an entire sound setup in addition to your cam and laptop (which is your entire post facility in most cases). Ive never tried taking it on a plane though. I'm always afraid I'll be forced to check it at the last moment, and I don't want to do that.

i've been using mine for going on 2 years and have taken over 20 flights with it. most flights i take out of a small airport and sometimes i have to check it at the gate. drives me nuts! but its been a very good bag. i don't see why you put yours in on its side, i sit mine on its bottom.

Interesting how you guys set up. I have a Lacie in there and all sorts of other crap. Just love how much space this bag has!

I don't like big camera bags. I have a small kata camera bag for my 150, batteries, charger, filters and minor stuff. I don't want to constantly carry around extra stuff like sound, lighting, monitor and other stuff if I'm not using it. When I do air travel you are allowed a larger bag and a personal bag. My personal bag is my basic camera stuff and my larger bag has sound, monitor and extra stuff(clothes) in a carrry on roller bag. Tripod, cables, and lighting gear gets checked. Then I can roll thru the airport with my small camera bag on top of my roller bag.

I TOO love the Kata bags. They give you so many options for storage.. give you plenty of extra support padding and the interior material just feel nice to touch... ahhhh. I wish I could make a snuggy out of it and war it on shoots... hehe.

They do make awesome bags. I highly recommend each and every one of them. I have the lowepro bag too and it's nice, but the Kata stuff is just so so so great I wouldn't think of buying something else...

cheers and glad others share the appreciation that I do tool

I use to fit my Sony PD170 in a Kata exo-12, it went unused for a while after I sold it... Now the T1i and accessories fit perfect. To small for the HMC.

One of the best things to do is to go to the local cam store with your camera and try them out. I did that and got the perfect Kata for pretty much everything I need. I personally love the inside to the cases and they are just so well made. The lowepro bag I have it a good one, but it doesn't have that soft warm inside... ahhhhhh.

just put my order in for the 207, good recommendations guys... Looking for this type of solution!

Did anyone go with the Detachable Trolley System? Personally, I'm getting the 207 so i don't have to set anything down wherever I am shooting... maybe the wheels would be good traveling though.

Have the prices been dropping on Kata bags? The price for this bag at B+H is $207 and I'm pretty sure it was double that a couple months ago. Full compass has it listed at $300.
