GH2 Why does Panasonic not move up to APS-C sensor for the GH3? Why Micro 4/3rds?

At the moment the GH2 hacked is the camera to beat. No DSLR out there can touch it, period. Its picture quality is superb and its versatility is totally unmatched. And yes, it has picture profiles.

I didn't know the hack gave the ability to use custom picture profiles. So custom curves can be used with the hack? I didn't like the simple settings of the Gh13 where you select a style and all you can do is make simple contrast adjustments of like -2 and such. To me that's not really much a picture profile.

Well, people are shooting with the options available for image control and the results are very good indeed. Of course it all depends on the knowledge, creativity and vision of the person behind the camera.

There is no way Panasonic will make the GH3 a better video camera than their AF10x line. Right now, all I would like to see is 10bit 422 clean HDMI, complete weather sealing (and seeing as those new Panny lenses are WR, I think that might happen), and 1080p60 (maybe even 720p120?), oh, and the option for 50/100mbit AVC Intra for the codec.

I can truthfully only see the 1080p60 and the weather sealing being the 2 things I want to actually happen.

1080p/60 is a given, Sony and Panasonic have a long standing rivalry. I still hoping for global electronic shutter to get rid of both jello and allow for some ultra high shutter flash syncing

I am personally doubtful as to the GH3 being weathersealed but 1080/60p is on my list of necessities.
The Sony A77 has both sealing and 1080 60. No clean HDMI by the looks of it, but it still looks like a good option.

Back to the OP. You have plenty of fast wide options, some of which have already been mentioned.
Olympus 12mm F2, 14-54mm 2.8-3-5, 12-60mm 2.8-4, 11-22mm 2.8-3.5, 14-35mm 2
Panasonic 14mm 2.5
Tokina 11-16mm 2.8

How much are those two? I also meant fast, wide and affordable. lol.
The new SLR Magic 12mm f1.6 is $499 and the Olympus 12mm F2.0 is $780 (B&H) compared to the Canon 24mm F1.4 L that is $1,639 (B&H) and half as sharp as the Oly 12mm F2.0.

I am a fan of wides. I'll tell you straight up that you need an 11-16/2.8 Tokina or similar to get what you're looking for.It isn't easy going super wide with the GH2, but it can be done if you choose wisely.
It's very easy to go insanely super wide on a gh2. Run, don't walk, to get the lumix 7-14. Seriously, you must try this lens. You will crave it. A stop slower than the tokina, but so preposterously wider that it's crazy. Make up the 1-stop difference by boosting the ISO one stop, so what, but if you want wide you can get WIDE. Wide as a 14 on a 5D, wider than an 11 on a 7D.

The dream lens for the GH2/3 would be Zeiss' Ultra Prime 8mm lens. It's incredibly fast, incredibly sharp, and distortion control is excellent.
Which is why you MUST try the 7-14. It is wider than the Zeiss 8mm, it is completely rectilinear, and while it is a stop slower it is ONLY one stop slower, while also being a zoom(!) and 1/100th the price. Seriously, borrow a 7-14 and just try it. It is the best Lumix lens ever made and it will bring you so much gh2 shooting joy...

This is true... it is only a stop. I would be a bit hesitant to lose that stop indoors but outdoors there's no reason to not use it. Gonna see if I can get me hands on it, finally.

IMO, Panasonic going to the APwhatever size sensor would be just plain stupid. Cropped is cropped, be it 1.5, 1.63 or 2.0. The only thing IMO that would make sense if Panny was to bring out a new sensor, would be to go Full Frame to compete with the big boys.

Yes, please make a full-frame Panny. And continue on with M4/3 as well.

Asking for the gh3 to have a bigger sensor is like asking for Harley davidson to put a pickup bed on their next bike. It defeats the whole purpose.

Sounds to me that what the OP would be happier with is if Canon would just upgrade their DSLRs to where they performed at least as well and with all the functionality of the gh2.

Ooooooooh backhand to Canon!

But for real... GH2 is murderous...

I would rather have...better low light for video

Fair enough on your other points, but what makes you think low light would get worse if they built a bigger sensor? The fact that there are larger sensors out there from other makers that are worse in low light? Doesn't make much sense to me. 99.9999% probability it would improve with larger pixels.

Pretty much. I haven't really had many problems with my T2i. I think the biggest problem is sometimes noise/macroblocking in certain low light situations with my Kit lens. I'd like better compression for color grading, lower noise higher ISOs and even better low light. The low light is great now, but I saw some FS100U footage and it blew me away. I'd just like something I can film under a bit more extreme circumstances for those night shots where I can't lug a lighting kit to light up an entire exterior shot.

I haven't really ran into any aliasing/moire issues that have been noticeable to me yet. Mostly I just want a bit cleaner footage (ie less macroblocking/noise at higher ISOs). It gets a bit noisy at higher ISOs with the kit lens. Performs like a champ with my Canon 50mm F1.8 in most situations, but still after seeing the FS100U and some of the super clean Gh2 hacked footage I would like a couple improvements. I just really don't want to spend $5,000 for a Sony FS100u. lol.

What about the Nex-5N? I've been reading about it and heard it has better low light than the 5D Mark II...that is has amazing low light and great noise reduction. Also, someone said they discovered and easter egg with the "Sunset" picture profile that gives 10-bit like color performance and it greatly minimized aliasing and moire....posted on EOSHD.

Those wide lenses posted for the GH2 look to be the kind of thing I am looking for if they can perform as well or better in low light with them as a T2i with an F1.8 lens.

I'll second Barry on the Lumix 7-14 F4. I've shot the same indoor scene with the Canon 7D 28mm f1.8, and the GH2 7-14 f4.0. The 7D footage at ISO1600 was unusable while the GH2 at ISO3200 was very good.

I think people worry way too much about crop factor on the GH2 - it's not that much different than APS-C's in video mode. I use the same set of primes between my GH2 and Canons and the crop factor has never been a problem for me. I still like using 28, 35, 50, and 85mm on the GH2 instead of trying to compensate and get ultra-wide primes - the compression of fore/background on a wide angle is just way different even if you can match the FOV.

I just wish there was a decent adapter with aperture control for EOS lenses - would love to toss my Canon 10-22mm on the GH2.

I am not sure why some (mostly Canon users?) are stuck on thinking a slightly larger sensor would do better in low light. The reality is if the the Panasonic sensor was the same size but only 1920 pixels wide, it would be a lot better in low light. There is a heck of a lot more this stuff than just sensor size.

I vote for keeping things small...which allows us to use all the great legacy glass.

How big can you make the EVF? unlimited right? I would love to see a huge detailed EVF on the next camera. I think if you had a full frame camera or m43 camera with an huge evf with a lot of room for info and interactivity it would be a big win.
