Why does my footage look like this?

it looks interlaced and it's played on a computer screen which is progressive.

Do you have the rights for that music?

I use Avid mostly. Although looking to some how get into FCP as well. Anyways, before you captured did you go into settings click on film and 24p then select advance pulldown in the video cadence options?

I'm guessing you didn't by the look of your video.

Man, I hate when people ask questions like this, and I've seen you ask it before. It's not like it's any of my business or anything, but it's definitely one of my pet peeves. It's not like he's making a profit off of that footage, maybe he just wanted to see how his footage looked with that song and liked it.

I'm sorry, I hate when people complain about other people's comments in forums, but questions like those just really annoy me for some reason lol. It would be different if he was showing us footage from a feature he was working on or something and he illegally used copyrighted music, but it was a short clip on vimeo of a 9 year old kayaking.

Sorry again, maybe I'm just venting or something haha

Thank you!

No, I don't have the rights to the music- but I'm not selling it, just fussing around with footage and wanted to put some easy listening in with it.

Would I do the 2:3:3:2 cadence or what? I'm sort of confused because I DID capture it with the 23.97 checkbox in Avid. How would I go about exporting it as progressive in Avid?

Actually, on second thought, it looks like I did a 24pN cadence when I should have done advanced... Thanks for your help.

Welcome. Yeah figured that was your problem if you shoot in 24pa always work in 23.976 timeline with the "advanced candence".

Simple mistake no worries.

Josh

If you don't have rights to the music, then you violated copyright law. Pure and simple.

ok he doesnt have the rights.. stand him up in front of the firing squad.. ive made loads of small videos for fun to show friends and never got the rights for the music.. now if i would make a video for professional use then i would get the rights, jeez give the guy a break.. im not saying its right or wrong that liquid logic used that track .. i just think its not necassary to comment on it,

i know copyright laws are there to protect artists work, but at the end of the day if u cant make a little funny non-profit video then i guess a good 80% of us should stop making videos.

Putting your video online for the whole world to see isn't 'showing it to a few friends'. It's against the law. The filmmaker should be aware of that. If he chooses to violate the law and the rights of the copyright holder, that's up to him.

But as a copyright holder myself, I'm going to bring the matter to his attention. If you want to be a professional, first don't infringe on the rights of other artists.

It's so funny to see such a dynamic here! Some of you are so welcoming and helpful and some are just way too uptight!

I could have sworn that my original post said NOTHING about the music!

A big thank you to those that gave helpful feedback in how to fix my problem!

Thanks!

I'm sorry you think we're 'uptight' because we don't like to see people's art stolen and used without their consent. I'm glad you got your question answered, though.

It's the law, man. If that doesn't bother you, that's up to you.

Yeah 23.976p with the candance set at 2332 (advanced) should be aboot right. I really do hate that they dont set it like that as default when you setup a project in 23.976p.

The Steve Miller band probably isn't the copyright owner. The record company probably is. And whether they're upset or not isn't the point -- it's their right to decide who can use the music and who can't. They should be asked for permission.

At some point they might decide to GET upset -- because of not just this one video, but all the other similar things floating around ripping off their music. And then they might decide to make an example out of a few of these people, with some nasty and expensive lawsuits. MIght never happen. But it might. That's a risk the person should be aware of.

That and the fact that it's against the law, and that makes it wrong -- pure and simple.

This is a forum used by many professionals, and a place where people come to learn from professionals. One of the main difference between being a professional and an amateur is knowing (and abiding by) the legal issues involved in your profession.

Sometimes someone asks a question, say about their video settings, and a helpful person will respond to the question about video settings, but also, perhaps, add some helpfulo information about encoding.

This is the same thing. bozobigsky didn't know if the original poster was aware of copyright laws just like he didn't know if he was aware of any particular timeline settings. He helpfully brought up the topic.. in what i think was a pretty gentle way.

All you guys complaining about that... just silly, and very amateurish.
