Why does my 7d keep shutting off?

I've had the 7d for a few days now and one thing thats been bothering me is that when in live mode after the camera is on for sometimes even a few seconds it will shut off. If I hit record it doesn't seem to turn off, but if its not recording it shuts off. Is this normal or is there something wrong with my camera?

I'm assuming your camera is not turning off, but the mirror is flipping back up to protect the sensor, cut down on heat, and save battery life.

You can change the amount of time the camera will wait before it goes into standby in the menu.

Along those lines, would you guys say it's more efficient on battery life to constantly turn the camera on and off whenever it's not in use for a few minutes, or is it better to leave it on and let it go in its "sleep" mode till whenever you're ready to record again?

Just looked in the menu and saw that the auto shut off was set to 1 minute which would explain why it kept turning off. Thanks.

I'd switch it off when not in operation. All around more efficient.

the funny thing is that I heard 2 other 7D owners freak out without knowing the auto shut off. One of them attempted to return the camera.

I found out this the hard way. It got me into an awkward situation...

I was taking publicity stills for a local short film last week and I was using live view mode so I could judge 16:9 framing and use focus assist to get the focus bang on. Everything was going swimmingly until, during a particularly quiet and intimate scene, an almighty "chk!" rang out from my camera... I had forgot to turn it off during a take and the auto-standby was set to 1 minute.

I didn't make that mistake twice...
