Why do you hate George Lucas?

I find it amusing that nothing brings out stronger senses of loyalty and betrayl than a Star Wars discussion on the net. People will rip them apart, and you know they have the special editions in their home.

No I don't.....(quickly hiding original edition VHS and Laser Disk editions, bootleg DVD editions of original trilogy....)

Personally I don't hate Lucas. I must have missed the boat on Star Wars, which I thought was okay but I don't include it in my top 50 movies...in comes in at 72. It was HIS movie, afterall. His vision not mine. For me, the most significant thing he did was American Graffiti. His use of music in that movie set the stage for many to follow. I think of Lucas more for his technical achievement more that his movie making. As a filmmaker, he's very middle of the pack for me.

Okay, I'll admit it: It might've been the singing that killed the Ewok thing for me. There was a musical number, right?

e

:) that's funny. The musical number I kind of liked, you had to like the musical number, come one now... maybe the dancing sucked!

i give him credit for creating this guy

imagine a world without him.

A lot of you may be too young to appreciate him because of his recent trek into the CG world. But I remember waiting for an hour at the front of the line with my mom when I was 9 or 10 to see this movie. (yeah yeah Im an old man) I was in awe at how he drew you in to being in space, on the ship. The camera motions, the Devout evil Darth Vadar.. what a name! At that time movies just were not done that way. But he risked everything to make this movie... People went to see it numerous times, (Of course we had no vcr's or HBo for that matter)

I mean who else can take a guy like Mark Hamill and make him a super star...

He shoulda left well enough alone though with the first three movies!

i love/hate lucas and for the same reasons.

But people seem to miss that what he was doing back in the 70's is the same thing he's doing now, trying to push the envelope of technical filmmaking, (remember those cool green/purple boxes around the tie fighters?) he just has an asston of money to throw at it now to make his pretty little movies.

I watched the special features on THX1138 and there's a great story from Lucas. Coppola gave him some money to write the script for THX after he saw lucas' short film from college and he told Coppola "I don't know how to write a script" but he did it anyway. About a month later he gives the script to Coppola, and after reading it, Coppola turns to him and says "Your're right, you don't know how to write a script."

the 2nd trilogy is fun to watch but it is apparent that Lucas can no longer write, and couldn't direct himself out of a paper bag. Parts of those prequels that fans were waiting for only superficially delivered. (case in point ... Episode 2, Anakin's "darkest moment" is probably one of the most brightly lit scenes in the movie) He really should have given it to his buddy Steve to direct.

AND HAN IS A GOD DAMN CRIMINAL, WHY WOULDN'T HE SHOOT FIRST.

The movies just couldn't live up to the hype. And how could they. You see this in music a lot. A band puts out a seminal album then can't find a way to repeat their success.

Lucas had SO MUCH going against him on the prequel series. Fans expectations were so high I don't think ANYONE could have met with their approval.

Of course, after seeing the last three it makes you wonder if he tried...:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

As one of the folks who constantly pisses and moans about Lucas, I'll just leave it at this:

- Great innovator. He's the reason many of us are able to do what we do with what we have.

- Lousy writer/director.

'Nuff said.

I am now vowing to lay my Lucas criticisms to rest for all time.

Now bring on those Wachowski Brothers!

Although I really anticipated the new films (Duh) I remained grounded when I saw them. It wasn't the hype it was just a complete lack of execution.

He's made some not-so-brilliant films, too.

He made some brilliant films 20 odd years ago...

Genius can fade, my friend.

He's only Directed a few films as it is.

I can't say he is a good director (comparitivley speaking in today's talent pool).

I think he lost 'it'. Whatever 'it' is, is gone and I can't be sure if ever had it as it is !

I would'nt hire him to make a film.

His last good film was Star Wars (and then American Graffiti).

I was watching some SF on the SITH DVD (Anatomy of a :60 scene or something) and there is a part whereas he literally just did not get the coverage he needed and is sitting there in the editing room going 'Oohh.... well ****. No worries, we'll have to go back out to the blue screen room and re-shoot this.

Nice coverage George.

That sounds like something I'd do. That's sad.

I always enjoyed Empire and the original Star Wars.

However I never considered them to be brilliant except for what he was able to achieve technically.

I've only ever watched the original series like 3 or 4 times and I've only seen the new trilogy once a piece in theaters and the only thing that took me in were the dazzling effects in the trailers.

So I'm not a Lucas fan.

I agree with the earlier sentiment that he is one hell of a producer/businessman.

But storyteller? No i don't think so.

However these stories appeal to a wide group of people otherwise they'd never have achieved the iconic status they have so that has to count for something.

Me too.... but back to the topic George Lucas.

If my neighbour rebuilt a 57 Chevy Belair to pristine condition I would be like wow.. awesome. If he then drove it into the wall across the street I would say.. ****.. but well it was his to crash. I feel the same about Star Wars. Whatever George did to it, it was his to do. So when people say he ruined Star Wars I think well it was his, he can do what he wants. After all its just a Movie.

My opinion on George Lucas is when he made Star Wars ep 4 he was considered a pioneer, taking up the new technology, now he does the same thing and people bag him. Maybe the expectations were just too high from the viewers, what I mean is maybe whilst the sotry was written the story also just wasnt quite there, so they pooped in some extra filler (that stunk) I mean why do you think he made the last 3 episodes first? Still I feel he had the courage to give it a go in the face of everything.

Without George Lucas I know I would have missed something special. So peace George.
